Hi all! I am new here and have been reading some of the threads re bladder blockage in male cats. My poor boy spring has just spent three days with a catheter in and on a drip after discovering his bladder was blocked. I brought him home this morning and he seems in good spirits. He's on royal canin urinary diet and he's eaten some wet and dry food since being home (only been home a few hours).
Anyway my concern is he seems to be lacking in bladder control? He has urinated twice (once in his cage on the way home) but the other he was lying down with me and urinated on himself. Is this normal after having a catheter in? He's on muscle relaxants so I don't know if that contributes to it? I'm trying to be happy because his urine was clear no blood or anything but I'm concerned by the lack of control. Also after doing this he spent a bit of time cleaning his genital area so I guess I'm worried he is still having problems?
TIA

Have you had a chance to ask your Vet about this?  I know cats don't urinate "normally" for awhile after being blocked, but don't recall reading about them not being able to control it.

I'd definitely discuss with the Vet if it hasn't improved.

Also, along with the new diet, did your Vet talk about trying to get Spring to drink more water.  It's imperative that they take in as much moisture as possible, so if he likes the wet food, try to feed that as much as possible, and maybe even add some water to it.  You might think about getting him a water fountain, if you don't already have one, and/or put out more water bowls for him.

Stress also plays a big part in cats blocking, if you can believe it.  Here is an article on how to help with that:  http://www.thecatsite.com/a/six-surefire-strategies-to-reduce-stress-in-cats

Thanks for your reply :) I did speak to the vet I was just also wondering what other people had experienced seen as it seems to vary greatly. Anyway he seems okay today, he drank heaps of water and he's peed a few times :) the biggest issue im having now is that he doesn't really want to use the litter tray he wants to pee on the floor instead. Right now I'm just happy he's peeing though!!

he may associate the litter box with the issues he was having, and need to be re trained to use it.  You could try moving it to a new location, , or try putting puppy pad in it, or "cat Attract" litter in it to try to bring him around.  Maybe something in this article will help, although much it it probably doesn't apply:  http://www.thecatsite.com/a/how-to-solve-litterbox-problems-in-cats-the-ultimate-guide

Yes, you are right, thankfully he is peeing!!!!!

Thank you! I'm thinking you're probably right. Thank god we have floor boards lol! He will use the litter tray if I stand there with him but not if I'm not in the room! His urine is still blood tinged too I'm not sure how long that is supposed to last? I will be calling the vet tomorrow to check. He's producing a lot of urine though so right now I'm hoping all is okay
