My almost 1 year old cat ate a part of our fake Christmas tree and was rushed into emergency surgery early in the wee morning hours. Surgery went great overall and they removed what they needed to remove. He is now staying over night at the hospital. But when doing blood work before the surgery took place, his white blood cell count was low, they plan to recheck his bloodwork in the morning. And after surgery he has a temp that they say is typically normal after having this surgery done and being on pain meds. I was wondering if anyone has any idea why his white blood cell count would be low and if a slightly elevated temp is as normal as they make it sound?? And if anyone has any tips or advice on what to expect and do when I bring him home with me tomorrow. Very nervous to have to take care of my poor kitty and want to do everything right for him.

The Vet should give you instructions as to how to take care of the little guy when you bring him home.  He may have pain meds, I just don't know, because not sure how extensive the surgery was.  I'm guessing so.

Low white blood count could have been because of the obstruction.  An infection or injury or inflammation can cause this.  Even stress can cause it, and I imagine your guy was under some stress with this obstruction.  I'm guessing if your Vet thinks it's anything to worry about, they'll re-test it at the follow-up visit to see if it's back up to normal.

on a quick recovery.

I just got him home last night. He was only sent home with pain meds. They retested his bloodwork before they sent him home because that was there main concern with sending him home. But his WBC is back to normal, so you must be right about the inflammation!
I'm hoping for a quick recovery too! A newly one year old being crated for the next 10-14 days isn't any fun!
