My cat is around thirteen years old and recently developed pyometra.  She had an operation to remove her infected uterus and ovaries and on Friday I took her home.

She ate and then drank too much and barfed, drank some more and barfed, kept going around the house to different bowls, and even trying to get up on the toilet to drink like that water would fix it!  DX  I was about to call the vet about all the barfing but she finally stopped.

She hadn't eaten anything else as far as I knew, so on Saturday I tried to entice her to eat some wet food.  She sniffed it and then vomited, so I wrote the vet, telling them the whole thing.

She said that the initial vomiting is fine and probably only because of the excessive drinking making her stomach distend.  This vomiting was maybe caused by the antibiotics, so she told me to not give them today and tomorrow and to try to feed her later.

So she hasn't had any for about twelve hours now but still won't eat.  I'm hoping she will tomorrow morning but in the meantime!  New weird problem.

I was showering and she came into the shower!  I thought maybe she was thirsty still and still trying weird new places to drink from, as occasionally in the past she has licked up shower water (but never before while I was IN and RUNNING it).  But then when she got in she didn't really drink, just sorta stood there.  I had my boyfriend get her out (she kinda wanted out herself at that point), but then five minutes later she stumbled back in and stood there getting wet again!

So... what?  So what??  Does this mean something?  Does anyone know what it means?

I've tried to search Google but all my results are about people trying to bathe cats, so no help there.

She's pretty depressed and lethargic, which I expect post-surgery, but she's acting weirder than other cats I've had go through surgery in the past, so I'm just wondering what complications there could be, and what's going on.  It seems like the day after surgery she was happier and would purr more easily too, and you'd think she'd just improve from there but now she's reluctant to purr and seems to be getting more depressed.

Any help or ideas would be useful.  :I

The main thing I would be concerned about is eating.  If she doesn't start eating by tomorrow I would definitely call the vet again.  The rest could be caused by any number of  things.  Her hormones have been jolted, there could still be remnants of anesthetic in her system, it could be pain, stress, it is really hard to say and her behavior should return to normal in time.  The not eating though needs to be addressed.

This could all be side effects from the anesthesia.  Try to get her to eat some plain meat baby food, chicken or turkey, no onions or garlic.

Thanks both for the reply!  I talked to the vet a day after I wrote this, and she had me take her off the antibiotics in case they were causing stomach-upset.  After that I could get her to eat, but only a tiny bit of wet food and nothing else.

Then stephanietx, you reminded me about baby food!  Years ago I gave it to a sick ferret but forgot about it, and when I read your post I was like, "Oh yeah!"  I got her some plain chicken baby food and she gobbled it up.  ^-^

Now it's been like a week and her appetite's back and she's acting pretty normal.  The only lingering concern is the lump on her stomach.  I've read that post-surgery lumps can be normal, and it's not hot or red or squishy or seeping, so it seems okay... it's a little big though (two inches), so I've mailed the vet about that and we'll see.

Thanks again!
