Hi. I have a 19 year old cat that seems to have done something to her leg or shoulder. She is able to walk but kind of limps and is very unsteady. She has been jumping off and on the bed but lays in strange position....seemingly to protect her leg or paw. She only weighs 6 pounds. I would like to help her with the pain but I don't know how. Any advice would be helpful.

Odds are that your kitty just has a simple strain which often clear up on their own.  For this reason, it's often advised to wait a day before taking her to the vet, in case it gets better.  Your kitty is 19 years old, however, so I'd recommend a vet visit now.  The vet can test for a broken bone (see  [article="22423"]Bone Fractures In Cats[/article]  ) or arthritis (see [article="30225"]Arthritis And Joint Pain In Cats[/article]  .)  He might also give her something for the pain.

In terms of treating at home, there isn't much you can do, other than keeping her as still as possible (which may be difficult.)  It's very important that you not give her any OTC pain medications, like tylenol, as these are toxic to cats and can damage their livers.

Please let us know how she does.

Hello. On January 31st, my kitty got really bad. Took her to the emergency vet and he said her heart blood work came back that she had arythmia. He thinks she had a blood clot that traveled to her back or hips. She was in so much pain that I had her euthanized. I couldn't stand seeing her that way and he said, other than blood thinners, there wasn't much else they could do for her. Thank you for your answer though. I like this website and visit it ofgen.
