I have 4 indoor cats- two Himalayas and a black 1/2 himalaya and an old orange and white toothless tabby. The black kitty 'Gurl' was being evasive and by time I noticed that she wasn't eating and drinking she was bony and very dehydrated. Took her to the vet and feline leukemia was neg as well as the other test they do along with it. Her kidneys were 21/2 xs the size and she was anemic and jaundiced. My vet said she could have either leukemia in her marrow and it wasn't showing or she has feline perontinitis.Either way she& my other kitty's are in extreme danger. She said the kindest thing I could do is euthanize her which after much wrestling with " could she get well?" I did. My heart is broken and I cannot stop crying. I don't have any idea what I'll do if all my friends [emoji]128148[/emoji] catch this. Anyone else out there have experience with feline peritonitis and will share? It would be most appreciated.

I'm so sorry for your loss :( I've not heard of feline peritonitis before. The jaundice sounds like something was wrong with her liver, but that could be from not eating too. Fatty liver disease can happen to cats that don't eat enough, which is why kitties with conditions that cause appetite loss are so at risk.

I don't know if anyone else here has had a cat with that, but I'm sure someone has. Again, so sorry for your loss :(

FIP stands for Feline Infectious Peritonitis so maybe that's what he meant. It's not especially common in older cats. . .how old was she? I wouldn't suspect FeLV either. There are many reasons cats will stop eating or drinking, and even if it's what we think is a silly reason it will still lead to kidney and liver failure. So really there's no way to know the underlying reason, unfortunately. Maybe a necropsy would have showed the reason, but maybe not. Cats are mysterious animals.

Oh gosh, I feel so stupid now. FIP, of course. I would definitely get a necropsy done if that is suspected since you have the other kitties. And of course, you're right about it not being common in older cats which is why I didn't go right to that probably.
