So 2.5 weeks ago on a very cold winter night a starving cat was on our porch. Me being me I declared to my husband we were taking her in. The next day she got into see the vets. Got her fleas and worms sorted out and had some bloodwork. Everything is fine. Vet estimates her at 8 months old.

We have a resident cat who is almost 3. Awesome cat. Super friendly and laid back. At first when we had new cat separated in the bathroom there were hissing and growling. Within a few days it slowly died down. Took advice from numerous articles and followed the cats cues. New cat never hissed or growled at old cat.

So about a week ago we let new cat have free range (it was very difficult keeping her shut in the bathroom when I have smalls kids coming and going from it. No we couldn't use any other room). No signs of aggression from either cats. They will even eat beside eachother no problem.

My problem is: they sleep in the same room no problem. Eat beside eachother no problem. Old cat doesn't pay new cat much mind honestly. Sometimes when new cat is playing with toys old cat gets curious and almost seems like she wants to play. New cat dislikes this, stops playing and goes elsewhere. Anyways randonly, maybe once a day, the new cat will attack the old cat out of no where. Everything will be hunkey dory and then BAM she is on old cat, old cats fur flying.

I just don't understand why! And it's driving me crazy and it is so discouraging. Husband thinks she has to go but I love her. At the same time I don't want my other baby terrorzied. My resident cat is the reason I became a cat person. My kids love her and she loves them!

Am I doing something wrong? What else can I do? They both get lots of cuddles. I play with them both. They will even each take turns chasing the lazer light! If they can be in the same room, eat beside eachother, and play with me at the same time (not together) where is this aggression coming from the new cat. Pardon my ignoance if the answer is standing infront of me. I feel so lost and could use some insight!

Thank you so so much!

It's still very early, you've done all the right things and things are going very well. I'd play interactive games with the kitten to dispel some of it's energy. It really does take patience. If you can stop the kitten when she looks like pouncing try to distract it with a toy. If it's in full fight mode some people throw a soft pillow or toy, I used a loud hand clap, some people shake penny jars etc. I used to give my kitten time outs when she acted aggressively.
