I have a cat that is overweight and I'm not sure how to help her. I give her half a can of fancy feast, one morning and one night, and she has a small bowl of dry food for UTI problems. I've tried to get her to exercise, but she does not want to leave my room because she is afraid of another cat and also when I try to play with her she will play for a little bit, then for some reason she becomes scared and goes to hide or wants me to stop. She is especially afraid of the laser pointers.

Any suggestions on how to help her lose weight? I know asking a vet is probably the way to go, but the one I have currently isn't very helpful and he is my only choice in vets as I live in a tiny town.

Thanks for any help.

Hi kurikitty, Maybe first solve the problem with her not leaving your room, that is a sad situation. Was the new cat properly introduced? Is it possible to go through it again?

Exercise for cats is simply playing and running, being full of energy as young cats normally are. I would think if you can make her happy and you don't over feed her, the weight issue will take care of itself.

Does she have access to your bedroom? Can she sleep on your bed at night? Do you feed her any human food?

See if you can find toys she enjoys. Keep the laser pointer away from her. Try out some different play techniques untill you find something that works for her. Play sessions are so important because they boost confidance.

Keep us posted!
