Hi guys. I have a cat that has been to the vet twice now for constipation issues. She is an older cat and I noticed she was trembling while trying to sleep and also wouldn't poop out much, so I took her to the vet and he gave her a shot with sugar water, also a shot for pain.

I've been looking online for things that can help her with this issue so that it does not come back again. Do you guys have any recommendations? I've read probiotics would be good or digestive enzymes. Also maybe adding psyllium husk powder or coconut fiber to her food.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Is your cat on any medication or supplement?  One of my cat is on generic prozac and when she was on a bigger dosage, she suffered terrible constipation.  I dialed down the dosage and now she goes about every other day.  The stool is soft.  I wish she would go every day but for now her schedule isn't causing her any pain.

What food does your cat eat?  If she is eating only kibbles, you may want to switch her to canned food or at least add it to her diet.  Is she well hydrated?  Is she less active now?  Activity has a bearing on regularity--same as for humans.

When my cat had her constipation issues, I signed up for the Feline Megacolon Yahoo Group.  If you're not getting sufficient advice here, they may be a better resource.  If you're doing everything right and the cat is still constipated and has big stools, as an older cat, she may be developing megacolon.  I don't want to alarm you, but it's something to keep in mind.

She isn't on anything. She eats wet and dry. 1 can of wet food split for morning and night, then she has dry food to eat for UTI problems. Do you have a link to this yahoo group? I searched it and got weird results.

Try https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups...lYwN2dGwEc2xrA3ZnaHAEc3RpbWUDMTQ4MTM2NDYwNQ--

I have had middling results with pumpkin.  My vet also recommended Miralax.  It worked for my cat who had mild constipation, but not as much for the cat with more severe constipation.  She didn't go any more often with Miralax--the difference was that her stool was large and soft. She would still only go about 3-4 days. I worried that having long term large stool would result in megacolon.  Ultimately, what solved the issue was decreasing her medication dosage.
