So last year i went to a mechanic shop and left my windows down. On my way home i realized a kitten had gotten into my vehicle, called the shop back to let them know and the lady wss like.. he choose you. If you want him hes yours. So i brought him home. At the time we had just moved out my husband and i with my bro in law and his girlfriend. Of course us being girls instantly fell in love with the kitty. He got super attached to her and not me so she said she would take responsibility for him got him neutered and got him his first shots. We all would buy food, and i would feed him and clean out his liter since i only work on weekend. Well fast forward to this year. . They broke up. . She left the cat and he was very depressed and would cry outside her door for about a month and a half and i guess now he has found peace with me since i take care of him. And now he does come to me and sleeps outside my door. Well all of a sudden she wants to come and take him away. I know she didnt chip him or adopt him . Can i stop her from taking him?. ..this breaks my heart and i dont want the kitty to just be taken away and not cared for because she is still bitter about their breakup. .

.

In my area the owner is the one who paid for or brought the animal home. Since you have no documentation of that it would become who is primary caregiver. If he's been to the vet it would be who ever has their name as the owner of record there. If that isn't you you can still show she abandoned him by having documentation of paying for food, litter, etc over a period of time and by going to a new vet and starting a new record to show you've been caring for him since her abandonment. Get him chipped and registered to you along with making sure he is up to date on shots and care.
