It's been a month since I registered as a member - about time to say a few words about Turbo and myself. Let me get to the best part right away: my favorite picture of Turbo. Maybe I'm biased, but this is what I call a prize domestic shorthair:
Turbo is 9 years old, and I am 65 - two senior bachelors living together. There is not much to say about me except that I am retired and somewhat obsessed with cats. I have mostly done computing and other unrewarding work.
The condominium where I live used to have a strict no-cat policy, but things began to loosen up 10-15 years ago. Residents were disobeying the ban, and laws were changed. There are now 4 cats in a building of 47 apartments.
A German neighbor of mine got a cat which they called Schnurri, a very playful and intelligent cat. He and I became friends in the spring of 2007. Schnurri would go in and out of my aparment, and I would feed him while the owners were absent. He deserves a picture of his own:
Shortly afterward, another neighbor got a high-energy kitten which she called Turbo, for obvious reasons. This is my first picture of Turbo from when he was 12 weeks and 5 days old:
Schnurri and Turbo became great friends who more or less lived together 24/7 for a long time. They would both go in and out of my apartment as well as the apartment of my mother, who used to live here at the time. Here is a picture of Scnurri and Turbo from September 2007. Turbo was 6 monhts old at the time, and Schnurri was 15 months.
Schnurri was the perfect companion for Turbo. Sadly, he had to move at the end of 2011. He took care of Turbo when he was a kitten and was his best friend for four and a half years.
Both cats were great buddies who would follow me around and enjoy belly rubs. But they were somewhat aloof, did not want to held or sit on my lap. I made Schnurri sit on my lap after a while, but Turbo refused. Which might be just as well, because he has grown fairly big (19 pounds).
Turbo's "mother" was not happy with this aloofness - she wanted a more cozy cat. So in 2009 she got a dog. After that, Turbo would gradually spend more and more time with me, until he hardly went home at all. We eventually transferred the ownership in 2014, but by then he had been living with me for years.
Turbo may be the most well-behaving cat I have known, which is one reason why he was allowed to move in with me. He may grasp my fingers and bite them for fun, but he is careful not to use force doing so - he never hurts me. What really brightens my day, every day, is to see his gratitude and high spirits. He is so thankful that I feed him, thankful that I rub him and go for walks with him. Reading about the problems other people have with their cats, I consider myself very lucky to have him.
Turbo is now the only family I have and my only close friend. I hope he lives until he is 25, at least.
