My boyfriend and I adopted a kitten. When we moved in, our landlord specifically said "if you guys ever get a pet, it's a $500 pet deposit and they must be spayed/neutered". So when we got him we thought we were good to go. Now she's saying we must get him declawed. My boyfriend still has the texts she sent about just the money and being spayed, and it is not written in the lease about declawing. I REFUSE to declaw my cat. I believe it is inhumane and not necessary. Can she force us to move out for not declawing him? I am willing to put the Soft Caps on him. I also think it is unfair that I'm paying that hefty of a fee for a pet deposit and that's still not good enough. Yet people who own dogs that ruin the apartment don't have to pay an extra fee. Like what is the $500 for then?! Just need some outside perspective. Thanks. Also my kitten is EXTREMELY good. He uses his scratching post and doesn't scratch anything else.

If it's not in the lease she can't evict you for not having him declawed.

My roommate does not allow cats in the house for the same reason. However when I found my new kitten, Amira, I decided to order nail caps to prevent clawing on furniture. Since then we had no issues with clawing and she is even allowed to roam the house now. Have you considered talking to your landlord about this alternative? Nail caps are a WAY better alternative to declawing.

I like soft claws. Ask her if that is a reasonable agreement, but if it's not in your lease then I believe she can not force you to do it. 4 years ago, I was renting and the requirement was "2 pets, spayed/neutered/declawed". Thankfully my 2 cats I bought already were declawed and altered. Good luck! :)
