Has anyone used colloidal silver for dental absesses in cats??

I'm short on the Echinacea until I get to the store.

I had treated an outdoor rescue with Echinacea in his food and it worked great.  My indoor cat (17 yrs) started having foul breath a little over a week ago and didn't realize it was a tooth until today when I saw his right cheek bigger than the left side.

I am a human doctor, not a vet and any advice that I give you concerning cats should be checked by a vet.   However the treatment of abscesses and infection of the teeth is similar in humans and cats.   Dental abscesses are very painful.  There is a general rule about abscesses and that is where there is pus, it should be let out!.  This usually means that the tooth should be removed if there is a dental abscess.

Don't mess around with echinacea or silver, they will have no effect.  Take your cat to the vet as soon as possible.  If the cat's face is swollen, then the need to have the teeth looked at by the vet is even more urgent as it is most likely that the poor cat is in even more pain and you will continue to expose your cat to severe pain as long as you delay.

With best wishes,

Geoffrey.

Well, there lies the problem.  The hubby has been furloughed and funds are extremely tight(not to mention we no longer have insurance).

We cannot financially afford to take him to a vet let alone ourselves to a doctor if we get sick!

I've treated my old outdoor rescue via Echinacea. I didn't catch his early like I did this time with my indoor cat, so I'm hoping the Echinacea will help him like it helped "Oldman kitty" (he passed at 21yrs old this spring)

I am sorry, but the only effective treatment for a tooth abscess is to remove the tooth.  Abscesses are full of pus under pressure and the only effective treatment is to let out the pus, relieving the pressure.

Neither echinacea nor silver will incise the abscess - and the pain will continue until either the tooth is removed or the abscess bursts spontaneously.

Surely there is some way that you can obtain a veterinary opinion?   It is really an urgent situation because of the pain.

With all best wishes to you and the cat,

Geoffrey

I am very sorry to say this but your cat is suffering and in great pain and needs you to help. Colloidal silver is not going to do anything- only a dentist visit will help. You need to find a way to pay for this or ask the local SPCA if there is any way to get help -and quickly. Ever had an abscessed tooth? It's incredibly excruciating.

maybe local cat coalition or organization can help. a lot of the vets do discounted community work. also vet schools. my friends dad takes every one of his cats for everything and anything there and he has no money.

I started giving him Echinacea mixed in with his favorite liquid for the last 3 days and the swelling has gone down tremendously. I'm going to keep it up for 3 more days.

Echinacea has some small antibacterial and antiviral properties but it's not going to help the root of the problem.. his tooth. It also decreases in effectiveness quickly and suffers from the law of diminishing returns. When paired with an antibiotic it can help with skin abscesses and bacterial respiratory infections. However, using it on its own with an already active abscess might kill off some small amount of bacteria in the beginning but just end up making the remaining bacteria more resistant to other forms of treatment.
