Hi,
My cat is a 10 year old neutered male and he goes outside.
In the past 6 months we have had about four occasions when he has come inside and not been himself.
Last Sunday he came in and he was visibly limping, could hardly walk a step without collapsing and he was meowing and hissing in pain. I checked him over and no visible signs of injury. Nothing in his paw or anything so I rushed him to the vet.
The vet checked him over and it was his hip area that was causing the pain as he cried when he felt it. He gave him a shot of Buprecare and a shot of metacam 0.2% cat.
I arranged to take him back on the Tuesday for a check up and an X-Ray.
On Tuesday the vet felt his hip area again and he didn't react at all. We agreed that an X-ray was still going ahead. At the end of the day we went back to collect him and speak to the vet. The X-ray showed a bone growth on his hip and this is what is causing the pain, called lumbosacral disease. They showed us the extra bone area on the X-ray. The vet gave us metacam 0.5mg specifically for cats. I'm in the U.K so that's why I'm being specific about meds in case they are different in the US.
We brought him home and he seemed okay, this morning he was okay. I gave him the metacam in his food at 9am this morning and this afternoon, having stayed in and not been active, he is limping again and quite subdued.
I'm not sure if I should get a second opinion on this. If the metacam was working, why is he still limping? Is it a nerve issue? I don't know what to do to help him. He's always been a really healthy and happy cat. His blood work came back as very healthy, according to the vet, better than what they would expect for his age. All levels in the normal and healthy range.
Does anyone know anything about this issue in cats, is be very grateful to know more. I've been googling it but it's mainly about dogs.
Thank you for reading
