Hi all im a first time cat owner and i have no clue what kind of treatment i should get my 5 month old kitten for fleas ive seen about four or five running through her forehead. After applying flea medicine do i leave her in her cage while the medicine works or do i let her free around the house?? Please any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading and God Bless

Ask the vet for a prescription flea medicine, such as Revolution or Advantage. The ones sold in pet stores often don't work very well. There is no need to crate a cat after application of flea medicine. Just try to discourage any lickng of the application area if the vet gives you a topical medicine. Some medicines are lquids or pills that a cat eats. It may take a few application of the medicine to fully remove the fleas. Most medicines are given once a month but check with your vet for the proper dosing. In some cases a medicine maybe given every few weeks for really severe infestations.

Besides treating your cat, you need to treat your home as fleas and their eggs can stick to bedding, clothes, furniture, etc. Vacuuming frquently and emptying the waste bin or bag outside the home helps. Wash bedding and clothes and such in hot water.

If your kitten is five months old, she is old enough to use treatment. You're lucky, I once had a four week old with fleas and it wasn't easy to find something to help with them. I'd suggest using edible treatment, since cats lick themselves to clean themselves I'd be a bit worried about them licking drops or a collar, but ultimately it's your decision. Good luck finding something!

Consider a bath as well.  If she has fleas, she probably has flea eggs on her as well.  Those are what falls off of her everywhere she goes and causes home infestations.
