Tip of my cats tail was pinch in the door and took the skin off. Vet gave me betadine to use. Just wondering if anyone has had similar experiences with this medicine and the outcome.

NO!! You need to use something that will not make kitty sick--they can reach their tail to groom and that can make them ill. Discuss with the vet before using anything to clean out a wound. Rule of thumb is to leave any wound alone as kitty will groom themselves. If it looks infected, take to the vet and let them tell you how to manage. If infected, it will get green and smell bad. Antibiotics will then be needed.

Wishing your kitty well!!!

The OP did say that the vet gave him / her the betadine to use on the cat's wound so I'm sure the cat was seen by a vet. The OP can try covering the betadine application area with vet wrap or gauze to keep the cat from licking. Open wounds do need to be treated to prevent infection. Cat saliva isn't exactly sterile
The OP can ask the vet about other ointments and treatments for the wound.

I am a human doctor, not a vet and any advice that I give about a cat should be checked by a vet.  Betadine is another name for Iodine.  This is an antiseptic element that has been used on wounds since, at least, the last 75 years.  It is effective, but can easily be washed off by the cat's tongue or any exudate that comes from the wound.

If the wound does not heal quickly, then you should take the cat back to the vet.  I  do not think that you should try to treat this yourself.

With regards,

Geoffrey

OMG!! I'm so sorry!! I missed the original post for some reason! The part where you said the vet gave you betadine. Thank god kitty has the cone of shame (sorry for kitty, but safe for the tail)

My first cat, Sunshine, injured her tail. In her case....well, she chewed it off herself. Long story short, ,lots of tension in the household and she was a dark tabby with a white tipped tail. For some reason, even as a kitten, she loved chasing it, but as an adult, during stressful times, she'd attack her tail then growl and hiss at the cat biting her tail! (herself!!).

I was devastated when I saw her mangled tail and rushed her to the vet. He didn't do anything topical as it was already healing nicely, but the cone of shame was placed. Thank GOD it didn't get infected because he would have had to amputate it. It healed perfectly and the white tip grew back too! She never did it again, though she had many stress behavior issues. I still loved her with all my heart and miss her.

It's been months since the incident but Rocco's tail is still intact and a little fur has even grown around the tail where it happened. Guess the betadine was a success.
