Yesterday I came across a tomcat who appeared to be half stuck in a storm drain. He was breating heavily and would hiss and scratch anyone who approached. The fire department was called and with some effort they took the cat out of the drain. However he appeared to be unable to stand on his hind legs. With help from some kind samaritans I was able to put him in a cardboard box and take him to a local vet who works with animal groups. He probably tried to crawl in there to protect himself.

The diagnosis was bad: Both his legs are broken high up, close to the pelvis and has a hernia on his belly. The vet said he couldn't yet rule out possible rupture of the urinary bladder, hematoma in his belly and neurological effects (being paralysed). He said he has chances of surviving because he looked like a big boy and that the cause was probably being hit by a car. The vet's assistant estimated his age at approximately 2-3 years. The poor boy was hissing, scratching and crying out from pain. I've never seen a cat cry out in such pain before, it was soul-crushing. I can't leave him alone if he survives.

But he is most likely a feral boy and I'm not sure of his temperament since yesterday he was in so much pain and reacted to anyone approaching. I've worked with feral cats turned housecats before (my sweet sweet Mith) but I've never had to deal with a cat that was both feral and could possibly become paralysed or at least unable to walk for an amount of time. He'll stay at the vet's for a while, but eventually he will have to be discharged and I'd like to take care of him if possible.

I'd like your advice in dealing with paralysed and/or injured-recovering feral cats. How should I handle him? Do I give him a litterbox? Can he stay in my room or will he be too scared in his condition? Anything you can think of, please.

Can he not have his own room? He'd feel safer.

My Loli was nearly torn apart by a dog and had a terrible hernia and wounds all over. She was feral and after spending several days sedated at the vet's she spent the next week under some shelves in my spare room, absolutely terrified. She had a litter tray and food and I tried to visit the room at fixed times as once I came in earlier than usual and she shot back under the shelves faster than a seriously injured cat should do.

You have to be creative, I had to tape some gauze onto a broom handle to clean her wounds, for example.

Good luck with him.

Most definitely a handsome boy. I wish I could offer you advice but my two feral cats had cold and eye infections, nowhere near what you will have to contend with. The most I can offer is moral support. I sure hope the little fellow pulls through and it is great that a caring person such as yourself found him. I think you are an awesome person for not walking away from such a difficult challenge and wish you and the cat all the best.

the good news here are, IF he survives and heals, in much tx to your tender care as I am sure it will be, he will also simultaneously be socialzed.   The Window of easy socialization opens up again, when they are  severely sick, and gets help.  They DO know they gets help, even if they in first moments of pain and scary hisses or even scratches for fighting for their life...  And they do know whom they shall be grateful to.

Ps.  I want also to add, being an adult succesful ferale, he has  healing meat and immune system much above the average.   Per definition, with an inferior immune systeme he would perish long ago...

So if he didnt got deadly wounds at the accident, now when he GOT professional help, and will have good aftercare,  I expect he shall survive and manage.

Why, there are cases of ferale cats whom got a whole leg seared off, and they survived and healed on their own...  Without any help from outside...

Good luck, and please continue to report!

Many years ago I cared for a cat who was hit by a car-broken pelvis. and other injuries. The first 24 hours are critical. As long as they express his bladder and no peeing blood-you should be ok. Cats are amazing at healing. They may have to sedate him for a few days to set the legs. they can express his bladder/bowels and give iv fluids/antibiotics while they give him time to recooperate.

The cat we hid in the back of Goodwill in 1997/1998? she stayed in a big box and we had to express her bladder on a pee pad. I remember she held her pee for almost 2 days until i brought in a catlitter tray and set her in it-she peed. I had to hold her hiney up because she couldnt hold herself up but that began my journey as a cat healer. Her and I formed a bound that even death can not sever. The only thing she needed her entire life was laxatives-the pelvis healed up smaller-so we had to spay her and she took lactulose for her entire life. She eventually developed complications with pooing but that was 4 years later. So she spent 3-4 years of paradise with me. She was my little buddy. We walked in the woods together and she was an incredible cat. I only wish I knew then what I know now. Don't give up too soon. The hardest part is waiting for them to heal.

She was hissy and pissy at first too but she wasn't feral. It took a good  month for her to heal until she started climbing out of a 3 foot tall box and got herself underneath shelving much like this cat got under the drain. She limped for a few months. I had stairs in my old place-we did rehab with her-having her chase toys up and down stairs. a year later limp was gone and she was good as new.

She was someones cat who they never fixed..she escaped one day - my step daughter let her out-she was gone for 2 days..i had already scheduled a spay for her in a week...she came back pregnant but we knew if we let her have the litter it would have killed her due to the small pelvis. She recovered from spay and spent her life next to my side. She wasn't as snuggly as Honeybee but she was  a good girl. I knew that had I not stolen her from her prior owner-she would have died a horrible death giving birth to babies and I just couldn't let it happen. The owner of the store told me to take her home-the girl who brought her in didn't want me to have her. she was jealous of us. I came in on my day off to feed her and wipe her down and change her litter. I had her laying on my chest and took a nap laying on a dirty floor in a warehouse type store but it was all because I was head over heels over this small cat who stole my heart. She was a happy cat. This began my path with special needs cats.

There is hope. The first 24-48 hours are critical but don't loose hope. Cats have a way about them. They are magical healers.

I'm afraid not, there is nowhere else where someone won't be disturbing him every few minutes. He can stay in my room which is quiet all day and I can make sure he has lots of places to hide and feel safe in it (including a "cave" cardboard box I'm willing to put next to the radiator, which I bet he'll love).

This is so great and it gives me much hope! I really believe you have a point here, as my other catbaby, Mith which came from difficult circumstances as well, bonded really well with the whole family and now loves (most) people.

Thank you so much. I'm going over to the vet's office tomorrow and hopefully I'll be able to post some good news. The vet was neither positive nor negative, but before I took him there he had put up a valiant fight despite his broken legs. I know the little fighter can make it!

That is incredibly sad news. I sit here with a heavy heart and a lump in my throat as I was really hoping for a better outcome. At least he had someone to care for him and was not left in the drain. I would also like to say how appreciative I am for what you did.

You said "I'm really not a "good" person." I would agree. A good person would have called someone and reported the cat. A great person would have dropped the cat off at the humane society. What you did was well beyond that and for me that makes you an "awesome" person!

I am so very sorry. My eyes are leaking. Damn allergies. Run free at the bridge

And I agree with the above post.. you are not just a good person. you went above and BEYOND what most people would do. Some people would walk by and say oh that poor cat. Others would stop and stare. Then others would call someone. Then another would go grab the baby and get it help. You went above and beyond. You stopped. You helped. You loved. You did your very best.

Oh, what a sweet looking kitty!
I am so sorry that he didn't make it.
Poor little thing.
He tried his best and so did you.
He had someone that cared about him in the end, and he knew that. Yes, like others have said, he will rest in peace, knowing someone cared. Thanks for letting us all know of this sweet kitty. We will all remember him now, thanks to you.
RIP Sweet Kitty!
You were loved and will be remembered!
