Has the kitten been to the vet? Litter box aversion could be a result of pain when defecating. Is the kitten declawed? Are the boxes covered? Any other cats?

When a cat does this there is something about the box/litter itself that the cat does not like. When a cat goes next to the box, he WANTS to go in the box but doesn't like something. Try a whole different style of litter box and see if that helps, not two alike, and place a piece of his feces in one of the boxes to see if that would attract him. Make sure all boxes are scooped out at least daily. I hope some more come on with advise, all the luck!

Went through this same thing this weekend.  My kitten has always been good about going in the litter box since we got her. However, this weekend she pooped on the floor twice about a foot away from the litter box twice.  I emptied the litter, cleaned the box and put a new bag of litter in and she instantly hopped in and pooped. Crazy cat.  A month had passed quicker than I had realized since last changing her litter and she just wanted it changed again.  So even emptying it multiple times a day just was not good enough for her.  Hopefully your problem is something as simple as that.

I've written a lot on litter box issues. If you want to see them in detail, look at all my previous posts.

When we first got our extremely litter-picky cat, we had to have four different types of litter boxes with all different types of litter scattered all over the house and test out which box, litter and location she liked best. Over the course of several months, we were able to remove one by one as she narrowed down her choices. That's the VERY SHORT version! There was a lot of trial and error.

With any cat, first we had to see the vet to rule out any physical and/or medical issues. Have you tried Cat Attract by Dr. Elsey? It's completely odorless but has some phermones that attract cats. Our cat couldn't stay away, and that's what eventually cured her problem.
