Thank you for reading first of all..

I have a 5 year old cat, I adopted earlier this year.  She's been healthy since I've got her, except last Saturday she started vommiting (3 times in 20 mins) and then she started looking very lethargic.  She wasn't doing much, or even playful.  I took her into a 24/7 vet.  They did blood work and xray.

X-Ray:  Fine No issues

Blood Work:  ALT was 340.  (about 3 times normal)

They recommended I keep her there for a few days.  It was over $2000 so I asked what if I take her home.  They recommended I let them give up a fluid pack and gave her antibiotics for 10 days, and a liver medicine.  I did that.

Monday I had her numbers rechecked.  Her ALT was 333.  So about the same, they recommended a liver / abdominal ultrasound.

I had the ultrasound done.  Here is what the note says.

The abdominal US revealed that the liver was diffusely hypoechoic with a miliary heterogenous pattern. The gall

bladder was small and minimal sludge was present. There were no other significant findings pending

radiologist review.

US guided liver aspirates were obtained and submitted for cytology.

Cat seemed to be getting better as the days went on, but now again she seems quite and possibly weak, yet still somewhat playful.  She seems to be eating and drinking water.  I checked the litter box things look fine.

Any suggestions?  Anyone have experience with this where only the ALT number is high?

They recommended I bring her back in 2 to 3 weeks to have bloodwork rechecked and unless she takes a turn for the worse I don't need to bring her in till then.

Thanks

Original Poster Here:

By the way one vet said 340 is very high.  Another said well it's not that high so I am not too worried hopefully just a small hiccup in her life.  Does anyone know if this is very high and life threatening?  I was hoping with time she would continue to improve.

Sorry no one has responded so far.  I had a cat who would, on occasion, have high ALT resutls.  They would usually get up into the 400s.  She would be given an antibiotic and they would go back down.  Reason for this was never determined, but this happened a few times.  She was 15 with kidney disease, so we never even had an ultra sound done, because, honestly, what would we have done if we'd have found something on the US

I have seen much higher ALT's when people have posted bloodwork here, so, to me, it's not really all that high.  Definitely above the norm, but as I said, I've seen much worse.  Is she taking Denamarin as the liver medicine?   We could never even get any liver supplement into our girl, and still she got better, so if you're able to give her the pills, so much the better.  I would follow the Vet's advise and give her the meds, then follow up in a month or so to see if the results have improved.

In the meantime, here's an article about raised liver enzymes that might be helpful:  http://www.thecatsite.com/a/elevated-liver-enzymes-in-cats-should-you-be-worried

Hi,

Yes I am giving her the liver supplement provided by the vet.  It's a complete pain to give it to her, but we've been battling it out every morning. :)

It's been 2 weeks since I took her in, she seems to be doing much better from my view.  Though I don't think she's back to 100% normal.  I noticed she's got TAN poop lately.  It's a mixture of dark colored with some tan or mixture.  Which I have not seen before.  I did try to get her to eat wet food which has been hard.  So I am not sure if it's due to that but online articles say tan pooop is a liver issue.

I am going to take her in later this week or next to get blood work rechecked to see how it's doing...

Hoping for good results.  I am glad she's more active and not in pain or anything.

Thanks

In regards to the change in the color of her stools, the change in food could definitely have something to do with that.  Or even the medication.  Not to say it isn't something to do with her liver, but just saying it could be the food, especially since it's intermingled with "normal" colored stool.  Just be sure to mention it when you visit the Vet later this week.

Glad to hear she's more active now.  No more vomiting?
