I am really afraid that there is something wrong with my three-year old male cat. I first noticed a change in him two days ago (Friday) when I returned home from work. Usually, when I get home, he goes beserk. He runs up to me purring, rubs against my legs, and "screams" at me--demanding to be petted. He then proceeds to follow me all over the house for about a half hour afterwards, just to be sure I am not going anywhere. Friday, when I got home--nothing. I went and found him lying on his favorite chair, and he looked up at me, but did not really acknowledge that I was there. He did not even purr when I petted him. I just tried to brush it off as him having an off day, but this stand-offish behavior has continued all weekend. He has always been somewhat hyper and a very vocal cat, but for the past couple of days, he has been very quiet, and has shown no interest in playing. Even when I tried to engage him with the laser dot toy, which he usually goes crazy for, he showed no interest.

He also has not eaten very much this weekend--maybe just a few bites of food. I got out his bag of treats and shook it, which usually makes him come running and climb all over me, but he showed no interest. He did however eat a few of them, but only when I walked up to him and offered them.

Last night, I also started noticing that he has been breathing rapidly. He could have been doing this before last night, but I just noticed it because I have been watching him so closely. He does not seem to have any difficulty breathing--his chest just seems to be moving faster than it should.

I plan to schedule a vet appointment first thing Monday (tomorrow) morning, but in the meantime, I am worried sick. Does anyone have any experience with these symptoms or any ideas about what could be wrong?

Any change in behavior is a sign something isn't quite right with your kitty.  He definitely needs to see the vet sooner rather than later.  It could be anything from a cold to something more serious.

My cat had similar symptoms before I found out she was anemic- she was also lethargic, not eating, not purring, and was licking the tile floor sand eating her litter (common symptom). Are her gums bubble-gum pink and healthy, or pale?

A cat that gets this sick, especially the rapid breathing, is very dangerous. You need to get kitty to the vet ASAP. My girl had this over the summer and she had a very bad case of pancreatitis as well as likely an infection. She nearly died. Thank GOD I had meds to help her and my vet opened the clinic after hours on a long weekend. One of the most stressful moments of my life. I'm blessed she fought hard and is purring next to me.

Rapid breathing is usually a sign of pancreatitis. It can be fatal so I urge you to get your cat to a vet asap.

i agree rapid breathing lack of eating isn't good. could be anything- one of my cats had cancer the other an upper respiratory. don't let it go too far before sending him! i'm worried i'll be waiting to hear back.
