Is my cat baby a calico or a tortoiseshell cat? I thought she was a calico, but her previous vet told me she is a tortoiseshell which I found very odd since she's an experienced vet. She also said she doesn't see many cats like mine. I'm finally asking my question now, but isn't my cat baby a calico in coloring? Her underside is all white and the orange and black areas are more distinctive instead of blended.

I found this description: "The two terms (calico and tortoiseshell) refer to coat colors. Calicos have a three-color combination‚white, black, and red-orange. Tortoiseshells lack the white and are often mottled."

If you have any ideas what breed my cat might be, please let me know.

Also, I'm so glad I got my calico cat baby with her attitude. Perfect cat for me for now. ^_^

M mingsmongols Yes, but from what I found online, it seems like my cat baby is a calico and not a tortie. Based on your response, are you saying my cat is a tortie? I'm not clear. Torties can have white, yes, but my cat is like 1/2 white or even more.

She doesn't really look like either to me. Too much white, and the patches are neither meshed together or seperated by white. If I had to guess I'd say she's a bicolor with white.

She could be a calico but definitely not a tortie. I'm still leaning towards the bi-color with white though.

Can't be a bi-color because she has 3 colors :D. Tri-color? :lol3: Usually a cat with a lot of white is a calico, unless her colored parts are brindle-ish, then she's a tortie and white. But her colors are odd. High-black calicos like that are pretty unusual. But I'd still probably call her a calico, although I wouldn't argue with someone who called her tortie and white.

She should be a Calico. She does display the 3 basic distinct colors of a Calico, that is orange, black and brown patches on white. Her patches are not marberlized to be considered a Tortie.
