i have two cats called princess and royalty, white and black. they both love being outside, they just spend their time in the backyard and never go far. but my white cat is getting sunburn i think.  her ears are pink and she has this small red mark above her eyes. i don't know what to do, its summer now but she hates being inside during the day. i started putting children sunscreen for 2 days now. is sunscreen only enough or what else should i do?

i will attach the photos

I didn't see this post last December. White cats should not be outside in the sun. My white outdoor cat now has skin cancer on his ears, which will eventually kill him. You cannot put sunscreen on a cat - he will lick it off & get sick. The OP's cat may have an early sign of skin cancer.

Thanks for replying, Primula Primula
I also have a 3 yo white female cat currently being investigated for a lesion near the inner corner of the eye and it might be cancer as well. I'm hoping it's not, but am considering taking her to a second vet to get a faster approach to this. Don't know if I'm being just too paranoid.
She appeared with this bruise around the inner corner of the eye, in the beginning is actually looked like a dark and dry discharge from the eye itself. After taking her to the vet, we realized it's actually the skin that is hurt. She has no access to the outdoors, has always been an apartment cat. She came home with the collar and a prescription for prednisolone, 5mg/day. Ten days after, collar gone, the bruise is better - though not cured - and also the scratching, but she's supposed to be with a reduced dose for more ten days. She has indeed lost some weight, but the vet says it's probably because of the time with the coller etc and she's eating normally. Her blood tests are all normal, but the vet did mention a few cell alterations on the citology done, "non-conclusive", he said. He says he'll see her after the prednisolone wears off and if the bruise hasn't receeded completely, the indication will a biopsy, but since it's so close to the eye, she'll need anesthesia and all the works.
I'm scared, obviously, and wondering if I should not wait for these ten more days and just take her to another vet. I'm also away from my home country, having moved here a couple of years ago I have little or no reference at all -- though I feel this vet is trustworthy, he seems a bit too calm. Or is it just me panicking? Any advice will help.

Several vets have advised me to put sunscreen to my cat who is mostly white, her ears are white.
They told me so because they noticed some sunburns on her ear tips. I have putting sunscreen on her ears for years and the burns have gone and her ears look better.
I always used baby sunscreen with total protection (50+). I asked for baby cream because I thought it is safer since baby can put their hands in their mouth with the risk of licking some of the cream.

However I never totally trusted those creams, any kind, and probably I'm right.
My cat is now hyperthyroid and I blame those sunscreens for the disease.

Hi, Antonio65 Antonio65
There are sunscreens that are now safe for cats. I know of a Brazilian brand and a British one, too.
I've never used them on my white one, but I'll certainly will do in the future. However, her bruise/lesion is too close to the eye to apply anything not-ophtalmologic safe.

C CamilaP ,
I had bought some of those sunscreens for pets but I didn't like them, they were to runny and not protective enough in my opinion.
Both some vets and people on other forums told me that sunscreen for babies would work even better and they were safe.

Now that my cat has hyperthyroidism I blame those creams, the vets say that I have no evidences of their guilt, but they have no idea of the cause either so everything could be the cause, even the creams.
