I had a kitty I called the Devil. She was cute as can be, a grey tuxedo short hair (picture "Socks" with grey instead of black) but, well, she destroyed all she came near, so it seemed.

As her coordination developed, she managed one day to bag a male Anna's hummingbird.

She's pictured here lounging on the open dishwasher. The Devil.

The Devil

Fortunately the Devil wasn't good at killing what she caught, so I was able to get the little birdie away from her.

Hummingbirds are a sight from a distance, like little shooting stars.

Held in the hand, they feel like a breath of air with feathers.

The birdie was too stunned to do much, so I mixed some honey in water and gave him some to drink.

ZOOOM! He flew off and hit my home office window!

After a recovery, and a bit more honey, I took him outside and he flew off.

The Devil again.

She herself fell victim to depredations and was eaten by a coyote. They, along with hummingbirds are plentiful where I live.

In any case, this episode well illustrates the prudence of keeping your cats indoors. They don't endanger other species, or end up becoming prey themselves.

This also illustrates that a bird or other critter can be rescued. They don't "get heart attacks" and die, no far from it. They run like [crazy]  when given the chance. '

Perhaps you have a tale of your own to share?

The Devil would appreciate it!

What a beautiful cat. I'm so sorry you lost her. I agree, it's way too dangerous to let cats roam around outside.

The cats love to roam outside. All those plants to hide in, climb on and nibble. They have such fun!

I never had a problem with a cat eating poisonous plants. They loved to nibble a little grass. And, Mother Nature's bountiful bosom is the biggest, best litter box there is!

And, they seem good at taking care of themselves.

But they aren't always. They get fleas, ticks, worms. Sometimes they get stung by bees or bitten by nasty ants. Coyotes and bobcats, as well as roaming big dogs, kill cats, too. Big dogs usually kill and leave; coyotes and bobcats eat EVERYTHING, paws, claws, tail, head, "insides" and all. Gulp.

Sometimes kittens get stuck. A friend's golden kitten kitty vanished. We found his body where his head had gotten stuck in the gap between a basement access door and the basement wall.

To say nothing of cars, trucks, even people on motorcycles.

So, keep your kitties indoors.
