Hi:   My cat Sushi is getting sick too often.  He does have underdeveloped kidneys, but so far he has been OK as I am feeding him fancy feast pates and Renal for Kidney function.

I adopted him 5 months ago.  He did have a virus which an antibiotic cleared up immediately.  Several months ago, he just stopped eating and drinking water.  I had not changed his food as I follow the strict  and careful advice a cat kidney specialist gave my vet.

The vet clinic gave him an antibiotic shot, hydrated him, and gave him some food stimulant tablets.  He stayed two nights and when I got him home, he was hungry and thirsty.  Normally I cannot leave him as he cries and screams and bangs the cage, but they needed to make sure he was hydrated.

Now the same symptoms have come back.  My vet gave him an antibiotic shot and showed me how to give him these tiny tablets once a day to stimulate eating.  She does not know what is wrong.  I think he may be constipated as his feces are not as big as they normally are and seem hard.

She Is coming to my home so I don't have to travel with him in the rain tomorrow to hydrate him, and give him another shot.

Has anyone seen these symptoms before?  4 months ago she took urine directly from his bladder, and took blood as well.  He is not in kidney failure as of now.  He wont' drink milk or eat yogurt.  She recommended a little for his stomach.

She is ordering a special treat to help cats with constipation.  It is natural and gentle.

I honestly do not know what to do anymore  I am keeping him warm and loving  him up.  I know cats get a bit down in the winter, and he is sad he can't sit on the window sill as the rains and cold are too strong.  I feel frustrated as we do not know why this started to happen so frequently.

Hi Joyce, my best advice for you is to take your cat to the vet once again. I lost my beautiful cat Calle 3 days ago due to leukemia and i still can't believe that she is gone.. My cat didn't have any symptoms before, in only two days she stopped eating and she would sleep all day. Tuesday afternoon i came back from school to find her on my bed. she had pee and vomited and was crying. i immediately took her to the vet and i was completely shock when the vet told me that we needed to put her to sleep.

please don't ignore the signs, my Callie didn't show any symptoms until it was too late.

good luck and i hope your cat gets well soon!

Joyce, I'm not of any help as I really don't know what is wrong with her but I hope Sushi gets better.
Do keep us posted and hope she drinks and maybe you can add a little water to her food too.

He needs diagnostic blood work as well as urinalysis again to make sure this isn't the beginning of kidney failure. I'm rather surprised that the last test was done 4 months ago and they didn't suggest repeating it when his symptoms are not getting better.

Hi all:  I needed to clarify that I have been seeing a vet as I explained and she came to my home today on Saturday when this was her day off.

He is good.  They already took so many tests.  He has an underdeveloped Kidney.  I had a Kidney cat specialist look at his xrays when they discovered that.  I am doing all i can to promote kidney health since he is not in kidney failure now.  He gained over a third of his body weight.  She was extremely pleased and a bit surprised since she sees cats with kidney issues and they are thin and do not eat much..  But he gets so much love and attention, he started eating more than double in my care.

She thinks it could be his sensitive stomach, high blood pressure or something with a kidney irritation.  Next week, I will bring him in for blood tests again and blood pressure exam.  He is horrible there and screams, spits, howls and makes sounds of such distress, it breaks my heart that is why we do not do more testing unless necessary as he is too stressed.  He cannot even stay there overnight as he howls and bangs against the cage.

She gave him an antibiotic and something for nausea which she sees he has a bit of when he stopped eating last time.

I also requested that she consult with a kidney specialist so we can rule out whatever is not there.

Now he is eating, but not drinking as much water.  He is not dehydrated.  We checked for that right away.  I give him fancy feast which as you know is 78% water and he gets Renal dry food for Kidney issues.  He is thriving from the skinny cat I adopted that ate so little.

It is now the rainy season and winter here in Israel, so I keep my living room warm and toasty for him and heat up special pads and put them under his blanket so he is really warm and snuggled.  I want his body to be comfortable.  We just woke up from our 2 hour naps.  He was under my robe under the blanket.  Hated to wake him up.

Will keep all of you informed on his progress.  Thank u for caring.

Joyce

Great to hear that the vet came over which is better for Sushi as this takes off the stress he has to go through at the vet. And also great to hear that he is doing well.
Good to hear that you are keeping him warm and cozy and I'm sure Sushi love you for that. Tell him that January sends his love.

Your cat should NOT have milk! Most cats are lactose intolerant- it is a myth about cats drinking milk as it can make them sick. They only drink milk from their mothers, as kittens. no animal besides humans drink milk as adults, and especially not from another species. Cow milk is also much different nutritionally from cat's milk.

If your cat has kidney issues, he could be anemic, meaning not enough red blood cells in circulation to provide oxygen to his organs and tissues. The kidneys control production of erythropoetin, which stimulates red blood cell production in the bone marrow, Good link here:
