I saw a stray get ran over by a car about a week ago. No one was stopping to help him afterward, so I pulled over and put him in my car. I took him to the vet to scan for a microchip and see what was wrong with him. They did some X-rays and he has a broken pelvis and tail. He didn’t want to do surgery and said the way it was broken he should heal on his own with cage rest. He wants to keep an eye on his tail to see if he regains any use of it before making the decision on whether to amputate it or not. So now he is set up in a modified dog playpen for 6-10 weeks.

Luckily he seems like a super chill cat and doesn't seem bothered to be in the cage.

The first day he pooped fine but couldn’t urinate. The vet showed me how to express his bladder and all was good. But after the second day, he was able to pass urine on his own just fine. Then he couldn’t pass stool.

Other than one small piece of poop yesterday he has not really pooped in 3 days. His stomach is quite swollen and he tries to poop but I think it is too painful and he gives up.

I took him back to the vet who gave him Lactulose. He has been on it for 2 days and still has not pooped (other than the tiny one).

The vet will not clear him out with an enema or anything like that. He is now suggesting I give him human Miralax.

He 100% does not want me to express his bowels due to the injuries and his abdomen being extremely tender due to being run over. Doing his bladder was okay since it didn’t require much pressure to get him to pee and though you could tell it was uncomfortable for him he would only protest for a second.

I have no option for a second vet opinion since he is the only vet in my town or within 50 miles of me.

Is Miralax safe? I’m supposed to give him 1/8th teaspoon in the evening.

He is still eating and drinking on his own. He is to be on a strictly canned food diet until he is passing stool on his own.

Yes, Miralax is safe, and many people here on the forum have used it. It makes the stool soft and easy to pass. It sounds like just what he needs.
