So, I've been having a little problem with one of my rescues. I've never had it before, in YEARS of working with cats. Advice appreciated...

My 8mo kitten has decided to use particular areas of my home (couch, 2 areas of carpet) as his personal litterbox. This is actually using, mind you, not just spraying. There are a multitude of clean litterboxes for his access. I have tried:
- cleaning said areas with every enzyme cleaner known to man
- cover areas in garbage bags & put litter boxes on top
- put boxes near said areas & slowly move them
- move him to box when I catch him & scoop his little paw
- keep him in non carpeted & upholstered room with box during his 2 or 3 usual "potty" times (he uses box in this case or just hides & holds it, depending on his mood).
- put piece of carpet in his litterbox

Any ideas on how to teach him? I'm patient & will try anything. I've taught many kittens & feel like I am failing him!

P.S. He has not had a traumatic upbringing, he's been loved from the second I rescued his Mom!

After cleaning the couch with enzymatic cleaner we tried placing some kibble in a food bowl on the problem area of the coach. We didn't have much luck with tin foil (or the double sided tape) but others have tried it and it worked for them.

I feel a little silly asking what litter you are using, I'm sure you know that pine pellet litter can hurt little paws.

Cat attract has been known to help some people, if you live in the US you can buy litter which contains this or you can get it on it's own from amazon.

It could also be health related, as he had a vet visit to rule out things like crystals or UTI?

If yes, here is an article that could be of use to you :

You have to figure out what litter box, litter and location of the box will satisfy your kitten. Feel free to read all my previous posts and what I've learned over the past year. One thing that helped solve our problem: Cat Attract - HERE. I think there'a also Kitten Attract which is probably the same thing. Before Cat Attract, we had four different types of litter boxes with all different types of litter scattered all over the house. For months we watched her and the boxes to see which box, litter and location she liked best. There was a lot of trial and error, but once we found out the magic combo with the location, we were able to remove all but one box. Make sure you're testing out different types of litter boxes - small, large, shallow for easy step in access for the little one, but big enough so he can freely move and turn around.
