So, when we adopted 2 baby girls, I fed them nothing but Blue Buffalo indoor kitten food. I kept stressing to my mom that they don't need to be eating that crap in Walmart or whatever, so for the first few months we strictly been giving them Blue Buffalo. My parents.. are 'old'.. they don't exactly understand or want to understand the importance of giving pets good quality food. My dad had it in his mind that 'oh, they don't need to be eating the same stuff every day' and he started introducing them to wet food.. not just any wet food.. stupid knock off brand wet cat food.. and I kept telling them 'don't give them that stuff, if you're gonna buy wet food, get something from blue buffalo!' .. they never listened. Their 'only once a week' turned into 'every other morning' then it turned into almost every day.. so they're getting a mix of Blue Buffalo and Friskies wet food (bleh) and I eventually just gave up on it. Two days ago, we completely ran out of Blue Buffalo and my mom goes out and buys them IAMS Indoor .. Weight and Hairball control. Why weight and hairball control? WHY IAMS? I don't know. Like I said, my parents are old and they just grab shit off the shelves 85% of the time.

The next day, one of the cats started vomiting.. (the other was completely fine, she has a stomach of steel or something. she might just have the poops, i don't know) she started getting lethargic, not her usual self. At the time, I didn't know she had fed her a completely different dry food, so I asked her what she ate.. the second she showed me, I said 'that's why, you gave her something she isn't use to' .. that's what I'm assuming anyway because she was completely fine until she ate it. She hasn't eaten or had any water all day and she's vomiting to the point where it's just.. saliva and stomach bile, I feel so bad for her.. and I'm sure my mom does too, I kept trying to tell her before to not buy a different brand of food, they're gonna get sick. (I know this because when I had a german shepherd, he got into another dogs dry food and he had a nice diarrhea dump waiting for me in his kennel after work) .. so I'm not sure what I can do for her. She isn't dehydrated (yet), I checked by pulling up on the nape of her neck, but she just looks so sad.. and miserable.. she sits in one spot all tucked under herself and she'll throw up literally nothing. A cat who purrs extremely loud and follows everyone around the house has just completely shut off, I don't know how to make her feel better. I don't think it's vet worthy since I'm almost sure it's because of the terrible dry food she had to eat, so what can I try to do for her at home. Will it just pass over on it's own? Should I try to force feed her water? If all else fails at home, I'll definitely take her to the vet, but like I said, I don't think it's that serious.. I just wanna help her get some food and water in that fat kitty belly.

Don't worry about the Friskies canned food---while it's not top-quality, canned food in general is better than dry food in general, as it has much more meat and protein. Meat by-products aren't bad for cats, because they're obligate carnivores. So I'd give your parents that one. Try to get them to stick to the pate flavors though; the shreds/chunks/etc. have a lot of gluten and starch.

But, yes, many cats have trouble with switching dry foods. Perhaps your parents learned that well enough! Hopefully the poor kitty will feel better soon.

The usual protocol for vomiting is: no food for 24 hours, to give the stomach time to settle. Then offer a very small amount of something bland and easy to digest (her usual canned food might be best). If they keep that down, then offer a little more. With cats I may not do the whole 24 hours; they're smaller than most dogs and don't do as well without food. But definitely wait at least 12 hours. If she vomits after that or just doesn't seem to be recovering well, it's time for a vet visit.

Thanks a bunch! She's still a little pukey, no signs of any kind of water or food or anything, so I guess we'll just wait it out half the day and see if she'll be interested in anything. So far, nothing.
