I've had my cat for almost a year and a half and he has only cuddled laid/sat on me one time. I got him from the humane society but he was a kitten when I got him and we picked him out because he was the calmest one and let us hold him. As soon as we got him home he stopped. He's not skittish at all so it's not that he's scared of us. He will come up and let us pet him but won't sit down. he's not mean at all, he has never scratched or bit anyone other than playing and he lets my 5 year old carry him around. He lets us pick him up but if we are sitting on the couch instead of sitting on the couch too he will spread out on the floor or sit on the other couch. He sleeps with me at night but only at the foot of the bed and doesn't come in there until I'm already asleep. Does anyone have any advice?

Accept your cat for who he is.

Really. Not all cats are cuddlers. There isn't a way to force him to become a cuddler. It's obvious from what you've said that he is a mellow and relaxed cat. He wants to be near your family and spend time with you. He just doesn't want to sit on laps or snuggle until later in the night.

There is not a single thing wrong with that. If I had to guess I'd say he is a lot like my cat. My cat doesn't cuddle or go on laps but we always find him on someone's bed at night. You know what my cat does while we fall asleep? He patrols the house. He checks doors and windows. He will yell if a door is closed and he can't check on a person (when you open the door he looks at you, glances in the room and walks out, but he only does it at night when we just lay down). Then when everyone is asleep and everything looks good he settles in himself. Any noises? He will be up in a flash checking it out. It's who he is and I wouldn't change him for the world.

Some cats just aren't cuddly. It's just their personality and doesn't mean that the cat is unhappy or something is "wrong".

Some cats just don't like to cuddle. My cat Tony only wants attention when he wants to give it and my other cat, Cleo can't sit still long enough to cuddle. Cats just have different personalities so how much they cuddle just depends on the cat. Just like there are people that like to be touchy feely and people that don't want other people in their bubble.

sounds like he's a relaxing cat to be around - no neediness, no nagging.
