I've got a 9wk old grey tabby kitten...we adopted her little over a week...took her a day to warm up to us and then she was running around the house like she had always been there..very playful and cuddly...no signs of any discomfort or illness

saturday comes around, 1wk from when we got her, and i had bought a different brand of food than what she had been on (i didnt think 1 week on 1 food would make a difference changing it that quickly, didnt think a habit could be created that fast)...im new to kittens, always had dogs, so i HOPE this is on me...i gave her the food and she only ate a little bit..about 1-2hr later, she threw up the food..she still seemed fine after..woke up the next morning and she vomitted yellow foamy bile in several spots in our room and living room..she looked like she was trying to get to her litter box to do it because there was a trail to it and right in front of it...she was vomitting a few times on sunday and the vet told us to give it a day and see what happens...very lethargic, hasnt pooped or pee or ate all day

took her to the vet monday morning and she had a 103 fever and was dehydrated..he gave her 3 shots and a subcutaneous injection of fluids...we took her home and she was still lethargic but seemed a little better...still not urine or other food though...did not vomit all day...took her back at around 7pm because she would not pee or eat so the vet gave her a liquid food mixture orally..her fever had gone, temp was 100

brought her home and around 11pm, she started to appear happier...she would get off the couch on her own and finally peed!...then went over to her bowl and had some of the chicken and rice i made...still lethargic but much more responsive to toys and just general interaction...woke up this morning and she had peed again and pooped...it was liquidy so still a little concerned but again, noticeably more responsive..she would not take her oral pill for her antibiotic so i am taking her to the vet to see if he can get her to

now to my question...does this sound like something more than an upset stomach from the improper weening in of her food? the vet said it could have been and that the food could have triggered an infection as well...any input is greatly appreciated...this is my first kitten and i want to make sure she is ok

Fever (and she had one) indicates infection.  Generally don't change foods on a cat suddenly, it can lead to all this stomach upset.  You may never know exactly what happened but i'm glad she is on the mend!

i really didnt think 1wk would make a difference but apparently (hopefully thats the cause of this)...but i guess the signs all lead to that

The stomach upset could be related to the food change but it could also have been caused by the illness which led to the fever.  One of my adult cats was throwing up bile like you mentioned and there was no food change.  I took her to the vet and she was given a shot for nausea to stop the vomiting.  She did not have a fever and there is nothing poisonous she could have ingested in my house.  The vet thought she had the kitty equivalent to human Gastroenteritis.  The nausea shot stopped the vomiting and he appetite went back to normal.  I am glad your baby is feeling better.

we're not out of the woods yet but thank you...again, she has shown positive signs in the past 12hr but thats only the beginning...im hoping it was just the upset tummy that led to all of this and the antibiotics and fluids will help her back to normal

Hi cbird11, What she is going through is not at all uncommon unfortunately. Sounds like a virus to me, too violent for a change of foods. If she is in good health otherwise, she will get over this quite quickly I should think. Don't worry too much. Fluids are the most important thing now, so try and add some boild (and cooled!) water if you give her wet food. Maybe avoid dry food at the moment. My cats also love a bit of little cottage cheese with some warmish water added. The cultures in fresh, propper cottage cheese are good for her intestines and again, she gets plenty liquids this way. Hope this helps.

What is her name?

Maybe when you have a chance read up on feeding Mazie a raw meat diet once she is well enough again. It has a tendency of curbing a lot of problems. Hope she feels better soon. Let us know okay?

Mazie appears to be doing better and better each day..she was a little more bouncy this morning, is drinking on her own and she is eatting more...still not enough tho..i can feel her ribs and i couldnt for the week that she was well before she was sick...but she has been peeing and pooping more normally now..i really think she wants her cat food because she runs to me and meows until i get food, then give her the rice and chicken and it has no smell so she only eats a little...the vet said a few more days before i can give her cat food again but i wanna make sure im really careful this time to not hinder her improvements

Great news!! Very happy for you :)

Do look into the raw diet. It's way more natural than the canned and dry food that's full of carbs.

Mazie is doing better each day but still not eating too much...she does not like the chicken and rice and its very apparent..she meows to get fed, runs to her dish and then sees or smells it (im told cats cant taste, its all smell?) and eats a little and looks up at me, almost disgusted...how can i ween her back to her old food? she needs to eat more, her energy is low but way higher than it was last week

So she is no longer vomiting correct?

When she was, was it undigested or digested food at all or just yellow bile?

Have you tried giving her slightly warmed up chicken baby food?

no more vomit...the first vomit, the day i changed her food, was undigested food..after that, it was all bile..she had nothing in her stomach to throw up..but she has not vomitted since monday...and i tried heating up the chicken and rice a bit and she still didnt eat it..thats been the ONLY thing ive tried to feed her, except the liquid food the vet gave her on tuesday night

Even though the chicken baby food is only chicken and water, for some darn reason cats LOVE it.

I'd try that asap, it might be a go!

Kitten is too young to not eat, still fairly fragile, as far as ability to go downhill vs an adult cat.

Agreed with @catwoman707. Kitten needs to be eating, right now. Either stage one baby good chicken or her original food before she vomited.

i planned on giving her a mixture of the chicken and rice with her original wet cat food...they are the smaller cans so i was going to mix like a 1/8-1/4 can in with the chicken and rice...does that sound like a good start to get her weaned back onto it? prior to her getting sick, she ate 1/2 can in am and 1/2 can in pm

It sounds fine, just a small amt at a time though so she doesn't go reacting to it since her tummy is just getting settled down again.

I gave her a mixture of the food and she killed it! Wasted no time and was EXTREMELY excited when she smelled me pull out the can of cat food...clawing and meowing at me...she wanted more and wouldnt stop meowing so i gave her a little more of the mixture after she finished the first bowl...didnt want to stuff her but could tell she was very hungry...she still doesnt have full energy but like i said, every day is more improvements

woke up this morning and she was playing with my face and climbing all over me...everything seems to be going back to normal so hopefully by early next week shes 100% again...next challenge is to give her a bath because she STINKS
