Hello fellow cat lovers!

My little baby Daisy was spayed a week ago today. She acted like nothing ever happened. She came home and immediately (well after a few hours of rest in the office) was back out with the other cats. She acts completely normal, very healthy appetite, playing, etc. This is what her stitches look like today and I'm slightly concerned with the bottom stitch. It looks a little red and irritated. I touched it and it didn't seem to bother her at all, no hotness or signs of infection. Should I be concerned? Does this warrant a trip to the vet?

I am not a vet but to me it looks like the bottom stitch is missing completely.  The irritation and redness looks like it is due to the stitch being pulled out and not an infection.  If this were my cat I would call the vet's office and send them the picture.  It has been a while since I have adopted a cat that was not spayed or neutered before I adopted them.  My now 10 year old female Starbuck did get an infection in her spay incision but the drainage was yellow.  Also the area had more red in it and was more swollen. Also with Starbuck I could tell she was in pain when I tried to touch the area.   This looks like a stitch some how got ripped out instead of an infection. You could also mention to the vet that it looks like the bottom stitch was ripped out and ask if she needs to come back in to have it fixed. Is the area where the bottom stitch looks like it is missing still bleeding?  I see some bleeding in the picture. If there is heavy bleeding in this area then I would take Daisy to the vet when they open.  By heavy bleeding I mean it is leaving stains on surfaces like your floors.  If there is no heavy bleeding then I would discuss this issue with the vet before making a decision to bring her back in.

I agree with the above, send a picture. The incision looks fine to me, I have had several cats lose a stitch or two and as long as the incision is not gaping open or bleeding heavily, you should be fine. On dissolvable stitches, they start to fall out normally after a week to ten days, you might call and see what kind you have,. As long as she is eating, not hiding, and there is no extreme swelling, pus or heat at the site, she should be fine. You might notice some warmth, because of the shaving, the hair acts as an insulator and the bare skin always feels pretty warm. Some redness and a small amount of swelling is normal too, after all she does have an incision from a surgery. Monitor it and call your vet if anything gets worse. All the luck!

Thank you for the responses! You guys are great. I sent this picture to my vet and he said it looks great to him and there is nothing to be concerned with :) So for now I will just keep an eye on it. They said if she is licking it excessively to swing by and they would give me a cone. I haven't noticed her excessively licking it, and I would honestly be more worried about leaving her home all day with a cone on while I'm at work. I have 2 other cats and they all play and I just don't think a cone would be safe.

So for now, I just keep an eye on it! Thank you guys again for responding :) Here is my baby Daisy :)
