Hi,
I'm new to the site. I have been wanting to post for a while now, but time is never on my side. I will start from the beginning. I lost my cat Kitty in February of 2015. She ad an ear tumor removed and stopped eating after that. I took her in and the vet said she had diabetes and we began shots. She began eating again for about a week. Then stopped again. I took her in again and she was dehydrated and fluids were given. That night, her sugar went low and I think she may have peed as well. I don't know since she was laying in my arms and I was sweaty as well. Anyway, she was all limp and not right. I gave her syrup and she seemed better. I called the vet in the morning. The doctor never called me back. That night her sugar went low again and she still hadn't ate. She was stiff until I gave her syrup again. I did not think she would make the night, but she did. I called a different vet and got her in right away. They told me she was not diabetic and had kidney failure. We had her on iv fluids for 3 days and sub fluids a few days after. Along with some meds. Nothing worked and I had to make the decision to put my 16 year old Kitty to sleep. She slept with me every night all night. She was first cat as an adult and got her just before I gave birth to my daughter. I also had another cat that I got for my daughter when she was 2. The previous vet never tested my cats for kidney disease or anything. I made the switch to the new vet for my remaining cat Cleo. We tested her blood and urine and found out she also had chronic kidney disease and was put on kidney food. Science diet. She could not eat the wet because she always threw it up and so she only got dry. She was put on this food in April of 2015. At that time she was 14. In September 2015, my daughter convinced me to get a kitten. Even though I still wasn't quite over my Kitty. I agreed. Cleo tolerated the new kitten except the new kitten, Sky, would not leave her alone and always wanted to play. Cleo did not want to play and no matter how much she growled and ran away Sky would not leave her alone. Cleo was tested 6 months after being on the new food and results showed she was improving. The same was true at her one year visit ad well. However, I opted to not do full blood work and only test her kidneys because money was tight. I said I would do it in the fall as I was graduating college and hoped for a better job by then. I late Aug. I noticed Cleo was not eating as much and had to do the full blood work then. Her creatine levels was up and her white blood cells count was up.And was dehydrated. She was put on antibiotics and given sub fluids. She seemed to get better until again in October she began to decline. She stopped eating on Saturday the 15th and just liked the juice from the can food. I had seen that before with Kitty so I was very concerned. Unfortunately, I had to go out of town that night and did not return until late. By the time I had gotten home, 12 hours later, she could barely walk. I knew that she was probably not going to get better and made the decision to have her put down. We had to go to an emergency vet because it was a Sunday. Well, they wanted more than I had to do the euthanasia and so we made her comfortable that last night with a heated blanket until we could go to our vet in the am. Her temp was 94 at the emergency vet. That morning I had my vet run her blood just to be sure and her BUN was off the chart. Her last BUN was no where near that level and was closer to normal. I wonder if the food did anything at all to prolong her life. I wonder if getting Sky had to do with her decline. I don't know. We decided to stay in the room at least for the sedation. I couldn't even do that with Kitty. It was just too painful. I wonder why both my cats had kidney problems. I fed them Purina Cat Chow all their life. I don't know if it's the phosphours in the food or if it's the by-product in it or if it's the food at all. I just don't know..I have decided to change Sky's food to Purina One indoor cat for now though. Just wish I knew about kidney disease sooner..I always thought cats showed signs of problems like not going in the box etc..I did not know. But hope to give any new cats a better outcome.

Thank you if u read all of this. Sorry it's so long.

I'm so sorry to read of your heartbreaking loses of your Cleo and Kitty. You gave both a lifetime of love and happiness and comforted and cared for them in sickness. Both Cleo and Kitty knew nothing but love. They were lucky to have you as their guardian. Kidney disease and failure is so common in felines. Please know that Kitty is looking after Cleo on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge as they run free and play now that they have been reunited. Please be kind to yourself and keep in contact with us. We are always here to listen [emoji]10084[/emoji]️

Both your cats lived to a geriatric age because of your loving care. It is very common for older cats to develop kidney disease, and although a diet may have prolonged their life for a little longer, sometimes the strictest diet and the best care still does not make a difference. It was their time to take that other fork in the road,  and they will be waiting for you at the end. It is also common for you to have these feelings and doubts, it is a part of the grieving process, it is grief.  Try not to dwell on the end but celebrate the time they shared your life and be comforted with the knowledge you gave them what they wanted the most in life, your love and a wonderful home to call their own. They would never want you to be so sad when thinking of them, if you were the first to go you would never want the ones that loved you to spend the rest of their lives in mourning. Yes it hurts, we miss them terribly. But there is no way to change the past and we must stay in the world of the living and learn to make a new life's order for ourselves and to find the sunshine once again, Learning to cope with grief is hard, but with the help of those who understand your grief you will learn to live with your loss, learn to live again. It takes time, not to ever forget, we could never do that, but it helps to soften the sharp pain of a broken heart, and helps us to find joy in our lives once again. Use your precious memories of happier times for comfort, and take comfort in knowing the bond you form with these loves will never leave you. Love is something we cannot touch or command, it is spiritual, thus eternal. Feel them in your heart, and know you will hold them tenderly there forever, let them return that love for as long as you live. As fro Skye, let her live as she is, happy being loved by her family, and make sure she drinks often, a water fountain helps to encourage this, especially when she gets older. Kiss her for me, I'll keep you all in my thoughts and prayers.......RIP sweet Cleo and Kitty, you will never be forgotten on this earth, let the pure light that shines from your place at the Rainbow Bridge shine down it's comfort to those you left behind. Sleep tight, little princesses, secure in knowing you were well loved and left behind such a legacy of love!

I am so sorry for your loss. It is never easy, especially when you have to make the decision. Rest assured knowing that you did the right thing, and you gave them happy lives full of love. Such short little lives our pets have to spend with us, but they can leave such an emptiness in our hearts when they're gone. Rest in peace, lil ones. [emoji]10084[/emoji]️

I'm sorry for for your loss [emoji]128557[/emoji] both your kitties lived long happy lives with you. And as others have said, kidney disease is very common in older cats, especially in cats who eat primarily dry food. Dry food does tend to be rough on a cat's kidneys

But then again, some cats I have known lived to be 20+ and had been eating dry food all of their lives.

But just know that in no way were their health problems your fault. They lived long, happy lives and it was their time to leave.:rbheart:

The fact that your kitties lived to such a wonderful age is a testament to the love and care you gave them. The sad thing is that regardless how long they live it never is long enough. I am sorry for your loss. I hope you realize that you did everything you could and are kind to yourself.

You did all that you could and it is clear that you loved your cats, so sorry to hear of this as we know how badly it hurts to lose one of our little furry friends. I hope that you realize that you did all you could, and that your heart slowly heals and one day you can look back and smile at the good memories not the pain.

God Bless.....
