cat refuses to use cat box

i have a cat that refuses to use the cat box.

he will not use it if there is one pile in the cat box, last night he decided to go on the rug.

we have used a different brand as well.

How many cats and how many litter boxes total in the house? Some cats do like really clean boxes and some like to poop in one and pee in another.

I have one cat that will come get me when he needs to go potty, I follow him up, scoop the box he wants, then he goes.

there are 3 cats and 2 cat boxes and he was doing this before we were forced to down size.

he poops next to the cat box as well

Some people say that you're supposed to have a little box for each cat plus one. For example, if you have 3 cats, you would have 4 litter boxes. Have you taken him to the vet?

not for this issue. before we downsized we had 3 cat boxes and he would just go on the floor right next to them and not in them even tho they were maintained. Could it be he just does not like the cat litter? or were it is placed?

we had 2 cats before we moved into a smaller space. the 3rd cat was a preexisting cat. they get along well

To answer your questions...yes and yes. He may also not like the type of litter boxes.

Is he by chance declawed?

No he is not declawed
