Hi! Im new here, my cat is around 1 year old, neutered male. A week or so I noticed a red hairless patch on his leg, took him to the vet and he has a bacterial infection. Been giving him meds for this past week and the infection is clearing up. The vet called today, his stool is fine but he has crystals in his urine and his pH level is 7. I am taking him back this
Saturday but was wondering if there is anything I can do in the meantime to make him more comfortable concerning the crystals. I feed him blue buffalo wet food twice a day, limited ingredient formula, and I leave out a bowl of dry food all day for him, same brand, in case he is hungry throughout the day. I am just worried about him and i dont know what I can or should be doing to helo him. Sorry if there is a thread on this already, I just made this account to ask about this. Thank you so much in advance for any help from you guys!

The main thing you can do is make sure he drinks a lot of water.  Canned food is much better than kibble for that purpose - maybe you could add another serving of canned food and cut back on the kibble for now.

There are also prescription foods that help dissolve crystals.  Hills Prescription Diet C/D Urinary tract health is one such food.  I would call the vet and ask about the possibility of picking some up before Saturday.

I eliminated his dry food for now, and added some water to his wet food for hydration which I saw a few people mention on other threads. Vet said it could be a one time thing or it could be a recurring issue, I have to bring another urine sample on Saturday. She said he will most likely need a prescription diet if it is a recurring problem. Im just worried and googling so many different things going crazy to make sure im doing the right things, ill be up all night worried about it! Lol

Mingo has had truvite crystals. You might start by eliminating the dry food altogether. If he's hungry, feed him wet food more often and mix several tablespoons of water in it to make a slurry of the food. Mingo laps that right down, but some cats don't like it. You can also get some clam juice and dilute it to make it go further. This fishy broth should appeal to him. Fancy Feast makes a Gravy Lover's blend that isn't the most nutritious, but it is very easy to work extra water into it to make a meaty broth my cats love. A few cans of that per week shouldn't hurt him.

The best treatment is to increase his water intake with one of these methods. If you simply must feed dry food, Purina One makes one kind for urinary tract problem cats. But try to keep the dry food to a minimum and the water intake to a maximum. Water alone will dissolve the crystals.

The vet sold me Royal Canin urinary and calming food and it made Mingo sick, very sick. It was an enormous waste of money.

P.S  I just missed your last post. You're on the right road; don't worry too much about it. With the extra water, it will work itself out in a few days. I would be very cautious about any prescription diet from the vet. Don't spend a lot of money on it.

@dreamerrose thank you for your input. It made me feel a little better. I will be cautious about the prescription food, I dont have tons of money to spend, and his first vet trip alone for the bacterial infection ended up costing $600+ thank god for care credit. I would prefer to be able to clear the crystals up on my own. Thank you all for your input everyone is great on this forum.

In that case, don't buy any food from the vet. You can have him retested if he shows signs of crystals like excessive licking of the genitals or peeing outside the box. Just keep pushing the water.
