I have been purchasing the frontline plus for dogs 89-132 and breaking it down and using it on my cats.  I just recently purchased some Frontline Gold for dogs 89-132 and I noticed that it states not to use it on cats.  It even says to keep your dogs and cats seperate once it has been applied.  I just don't see why the formulation would be that much difference between the Gold and Plus formulas.  I have 7 cats and want to use the Frontline Gold but cannot afford to purchase 7 doses for the cats every month.  If I cannot use the gold I will go back to the Frontline Plus.  Someone please advise.  Thanks for your help,

Kurt

I looked up the package info and the cat formula says:
9.8% fipronil
11.8% s-methoprene
0.25% pyriproxyfen

The dog formula says the same but it has only 8.8% s-methoprone (which is the same as Frontline Plus). Since pyriproxyfen is the different ingredient, and its % is the same in the dog and cat formulas, I would say that the appropriate dosage of the dog formula ought to be just as safe as an appropriate dosage of the cat formula.

But, disclaimer: I haven't used it myself so it's something you have to decide for yourself. Pyriproxyfen is a synthethic pyrethrin, and cats have been known to sometimes have trouble with pyrethrins. Maybe that's why it says to consult a vet before use. If you can find the full product info sheet it should tell you what side effects to watch for.

I may  be wrong.  I checked with someone who is in the biz and she said the only difference was a very small difference in the concentration of methoprene and that its actually higher in the cat version and she thinks it would be ok if you were precise about the dose.  But you would have to get the dosage just right and that means using a marked oral syringe to extract the right amount.  Perhaps you can ask your vet?

Absolutely 100% do NOT use the dog formulation.  I know of cats who have become extremely ill.  It is NOT the same ingredients, and its toxic to cats.
Do you know which ingredients are different? It will be helpful to know that for the future :).

I'm sorry I don't know the specific difference.  I just know people who did it and poisoned their cats.  The warning is on the box for a legitimate reason.  It may not apply to frontline plus.  The website says they were formulated differently for cats and dogs.  http://www.frontline.com/gold/Pages/default.aspx

I'm checking with someone who will know and i'll try and report back.
