Hi everyone, I'm a vegetarian and I'd like to make sure the meat my kitty is eating isn't being sourced from a questionable place. I'm looking for basic wet foods (without a lot of fillers/starches) from companies who aren't shy talking about where the meat comes from.

Right now she eats Hound & Gatos which has been great so far. I love the ingredients, the price, and she loves the taste. Does anyone know anything about how they make it? And are there any other brands I should know about? I'd love more variety for her and to prevent future issues with recall incidents.

Thanks!

Fellow vegetarian here. I'm not from the US so I'm not able to help you with your enquiry.

Have you thought off adding raw meat into their diet? I only mention it because the people who manufacture commercially available raw food tend to source their meat from ethical producers.

Hey! I've considered it but have read a lot that turns me off :( Specifically when handling the litter box and how kitties can track e coli around. I will do it if I must but am still crossing my fingers there's an okay canned food out there :)

Honestly, you're probably never going to get enough information from any companies to be able to determine if the meat is sourced ethically enough for your liking. Some companies are more open than others but ultimately you're never really going to know. A better option would be to make your own food that way you can source your own meats from local farmers or from some place like Hare Today. You could make cooked food with EZcomplete, if you're not willing or ready to do raw.

EZcomplete also works for cooked food, which is what I make. Our cats love it!

Ethical + pet food companies = oxymoron, for the most part.

There are a few that have signed a pledge re: transparency of their ingredient sourcing, however, those companies are far and few and whether the animals are raised humanely - who knows. I agree with missmimz, you never really know.

The following offer transparency re sourcing:

Nature's Logic
Bravo
Primal
Addiction
Pet Tao

There are few more via TAPF pledge. Weruva is a pretty good company even though they haven't signed a pledge.
