My cat has feline herpes and upper respiratory infection, but we've known about that for almost 2 years. However, he developed what seemed to either be a cold or a flare up from his herpes. He was fine except for some discharge from his eyes and nose.

This morning I woke up to him laying in a hunched over position (feet tucked under him) and when I picked him up his breathing seemed to be shallow and he was making sounds that just sounded like whimpering every time he took a breath. He sounds like he's in pain but I cant tell for sure.

I tried to pick him up to move him to another spot but as soon as I did he defecated, but he didn't change position at all, it just seemed like he couldn't control his bowels. We laid him on a blanket and while I was watching him I noticed he also urinated while laying down.

We took him to the vet and they ran blood tests and x rays, but they said they didn't see anything wrong other than some irritation in the lungs from the upper respiratory infection and gas in his stomach, which they said should pass on its own.

However, its been 12 hours since I took him to the vet, and his manner has not changed at all. He still hardly moves and his breaths are shallow and are accompanied by his whimpering.

Does anyone know what could be wrong with my cat?

I'm sorry to hear that. It must be awful for you to see him like that. It doesn't sound too good. I would call up another vet and ask their opinion. It sounds like he is suffering.

I have no idea but I would be extremely concerned if it were my cat.

Is it possible to call your vet back and give them the symptoms?

I have no idea what time it is where you are, do you have an animal hospital that you can ring? I'd be taking the xrays and other results with me.

I agree with everyone else - get a second opinion as soon as you can.  Cats aren't suddenly incontinent because of a bit of gas.   I don't know how to read the x-ray so can't offer any feedback on that but everything you describe, and the video, show a sick cat.  Furthermore, cats are masters at hiding pain.  If your cat is whimpering, that means he really hurts.

You might need to take him to an emergency clinic in order to get a same day appointment with a new vet.  Please let us know what the vet says.

Sending healing vibes to the little guy.

Did they give him any treatment? Did they say anything about astma? I would either take him back or take him to another veterinarian for a second opinion, and I would do it immediately.

Do you have any update on your cat @Celeste Jelyne?   It must be very stressful seeing him like that and I agree with others here, that I would go back to the vet or try to get a second opinion if he has not improved dramatically.

He's doing a bit better today, not as much whimpering. He is moving around a little more but not half as active as he usually is.

I couldn't get a second opinion on the phone so we're bringing him to another vet tomorrow at 2:30.

Thank you everyone for your responses and good vibes for my kitty

Oh my. Did they give him a strong antibiotic to treat potential bacterial infections?

More good vibes.  Hopefully the next vet will have more answers and be able to help some more.
