I just brought home my new little guy; and there are a few things that I've never come across and am not sure how to go about it. So, here goes....

Up until yesterday he was an outdoor cat, the person we took him in from says he was dumped on their farm and just seemed to hang around. I've been told because of his circumstances he has stunted growth, he honestly is no bigger than a 6-8 week old kitten but the vet claims that he appears to be around 5 months old. I've never seen anything like this ever. From my research am I right that it's possibly because of the lack of nutrition and the fact that he's been infested with fleas, mites, lice, worms and has had an upper respiratory infection for however long? Does anyone know if he will ever catch up? Not that I have a problem with him being small, it doesn't matter to me I'm more so just wondering.

The vet treated him with revolution, de-wormer, and for his ear mites as well as put him on antibiotics for his cold. How long does the de-wormer usually take to work? I currently have him quarinted in a room because I don't want my other animals to catch anything while he is recuperating. Anyone have any suggestions on how long to keep him by himself? I've been told he should be ok near my dogs, but not my cat. If he's being treated for everything does that mean he's not contagious anymore in terms of the mites, worms, etc? Is it even safe for me to have him sleep with me? Can I get worms from him? How would I know if he has roundworm? I'm going to ask for him to be tested for it when we go back to the vet, but any advice in the mean time is appreciated.

I'm bringing him back to the vet in 2 weeks for his first set of shots and I plan on getting a more thorough examination (the rescue I worked with took him to their vet so I wasn't able to be as attentive to everything as I'd like to).

I guess I'm just filled with questions, my older cat has only had very few issues as a kitten and they were mostly allergies which I understand more. So, I just have no experience with some of these health issues.

Now, on an even more serious note I believe he may be blind. His eyes are blue, and he struggles to focus and you can hold a finger in front of him and he doesn't notice. Any tips for raising a blind cat?

I also think he may be partially deaf, I've noticed when I call for him he has a hard time figuring out where the noise is coming from. I also snapped my fingers behind each of this ears and he only responded a bit on one side.

I've been trying to keep his food dishes, litter and bed in close proximity so he's able to find everything easily. I'm looking for advice on how to help him, I'm just in a bit of uncharted water with him; but I've fallen in love with him, he's just this tiny adorable cuddle bug and I want to do all that I can to make him healthy and happy.

Thank you for giving this sweet kitty a chance and a loving home. He might not be blind, a poor diet could cause vision issues, also cats can't see things very well when they are close to them. A healthy diet might help.  I hope other people can answer some of your other questions. Can share a few pictures of him we all love kitty pictures . BTW did you name him yet?

So wonderful of you to take in this little kitty. Love to hear what you decide to name him.

Every situation with every kitty is different when it comes to stunted growth.  Is he underweight or just small for his age? Either way, I would recommend giving him KMR formula. I've used this with young kittens, pregnant cats and small or underweight cats. The best thing would be to give him food high in protein. Some kittens who are small for their age will always be smaller than average but I've had others fill out and grow and you would never know they had a rough start in life. It can take a while but many will catch up. It really depends on how old they are but at 5 months many kittens are still growing and will continue to grow for a while. I've had some kittens that were almost full grown at 6-9 months but at 5 months you still have a lot of time to give him what he needs nutritionally to help him as he matures. Eye issues are something that you just have to keep an eye on. Sometimes cats that have been living outdoors and are malnourished may have issues due to nutritional deficiencies and may resolve over time.  When it comes to your concerns about worms as long as he has been treated and is not throwing up worms the dewormer should have worked fine and he probably won't need additional treatment. Dewormer works very fast and well usually. Usually after deworming I always clean the litterbox and change the litter.

Thanks for the advice. I picked up Acana kitten food and a probiotic supplement to help him adjust to food (in general). Last night when I picked him up I had the misfortune of cleaning up some worms from his bum, but no more in his poops from today. So I'm glad to see (or not haha) that. I was told he's 5 months, but when I was going through his records from the vet visit it says 10 weeks; so I'm not sure which is true but I would believe closer to 10 weeks. I've been watching him tonight and I've noticed it seems like his pupils are dilated all the time, you can barely/not often see his eye colour. It's there, but I've noticed they're dilated. His hearing seems to be getting better each day, I noticed tonight his ears moving towards noise, which is awesome!

I'm not fully sure what I want his name to be, I'm between Frodo and Gimli. He's so tiny, but so strong I'm leaning towards Gimli. :) This is him with our dog, sam; cuddling.
