I just brought home my new little guy; and there are a few things that I've never come across and am not sure how to go about it. So, here goes....
Up until yesterday he was an outdoor cat, the person we took him in from says he was dumped on their farm and just seemed to hang around. I've been told because of his circumstances he has stunted growth, he honestly is no bigger than a 6-8 week old kitten but the vet claims that he appears to be around 5 months old. I've never seen anything like this ever. From my research am I right that it's possibly because of the lack of nutrition and the fact that he's been infested with fleas, mites, lice, worms and has had an upper respiratory infection for however long? Does anyone know if he will ever catch up? Not that I have a problem with him being small, it doesn't matter to me I'm more so just wondering.
The vet treated him with revolution, de-wormer, and for his ear mites as well as put him on antibiotics for his cold. How long does the de-wormer usually take to work? I currently have him quarinted in a room because I don't want my other animals to catch anything while he is recuperating. Anyone have any suggestions on how long to keep him by himself? I've been told he should be ok near my dogs, but not my cat. If he's being treated for everything does that mean he's not contagious anymore in terms of the mites, worms, etc? Is it even safe for me to have him sleep with me? Can I get worms from him? How would I know if he has roundworm? I'm going to ask for him to be tested for it when we go back to the vet, but any advice in the mean time is appreciated.
I'm bringing him back to the vet in 2 weeks for his first set of shots and I plan on getting a more thorough examination (the rescue I worked with took him to their vet so I wasn't able to be as attentive to everything as I'd like to).
I guess I'm just filled with questions, my older cat has only had very few issues as a kitten and they were mostly allergies which I understand more. So, I just have no experience with some of these health issues.
Now, on an even more serious note I believe he may be blind. His eyes are blue, and he struggles to focus and you can hold a finger in front of him and he doesn't notice. Any tips for raising a blind cat?
I also think he may be partially deaf, I've noticed when I call for him he has a hard time figuring out where the noise is coming from. I also snapped my fingers behind each of this ears and he only responded a bit on one side.
I've been trying to keep his food dishes, litter and bed in close proximity so he's able to find everything easily. I'm looking for advice on how to help him, I'm just in a bit of uncharted water with him; but I've fallen in love with him, he's just this tiny adorable cuddle bug and I want to do all that I can to make him healthy and happy.
