I have a feral female cat that I have fed and sheltered outside for the last 5 years. It has taken me this long so Kity-Kity does not run away from me. She is sheltering under my insulated trailer as it is cold here in VT. About 3 weeks ago she came and I noticed her tail was injured, bent and looked like some animal tried yet again to get at her. I watched and for the last 2-1/2 weeks she has been cleaning and finally had a very narrow area and then I saw that she was going to take it off herself. My Vet and Shelter friend told me she might do this. Well she was missing for breakfast but came home about 3PM and she did bite it off! There is a wound area about 2-3 inches and it is not weeping, or bleeding just clean and red. She came for supper and is now under the house, where I know she is safe and warm. Should I call my Vet to see if he will give me an antibiotic/pain pill that I can crush and put in her food? I have had people tell me to trap her in a have a heart trap and take her to vets, but physically I am unable to do that, and I DO NOT want to scare her anymore. It has taken us this long to trust each other. She has been through other injuries throughout these 5 years, ear problems, and owl attack and others. Any answer will be appreciated. Thanks

I assume she is sterile, as our Humane Society goes around and does TSR (Trap, Spay,Neuter) and then leave a small cut on their ears. I have been here almost 6 years and she never had any litters.

The tail injury likely severed the nerve and that lower part of her tail was dying off/died. It was ready to come off.

It amazes me as I have seen a feral with the same thing, then suddenly that lower portion below the injury was gone.

Would you believe I have seen a feral with the same thing happening to his ear?? Yep, couldn't get his butt trapped to fix, started to think maybe he had been trapped and fixed before since he was clearly trap smart so I stopped trying.

He had an ear that didn't look good, after a couple weeks one day the darn ear was simply gone! I could not believe my eyes....

Of course he didn't chew it off but still......lol

Keep a close eye on things but for now leave her be, you will know whether there is a problem that needs vet care or not soon enough.

Thanks, I will keep an eye on her as she stays close to home now that the cold and snow are here. As long as it looks healthy and is healing. I had another little boy who was left in my driveway on a snowy night 3 years ago. I tried to call him and he ran off into the woods.I so worried about him, and then spring came and he showed up! A bit scared and many boo-boos. But I was able to tame him enough, and our wonderful Vet and Humane Society helped me with getting him shots, blood checked, neutered and then some. I brought him inside to his nice warm home, and he is so loving! The scars are still there and he needed major dental work last year, Six teeth pulled and other oral surgery. But Buddy is nice and warm and on my bed. I do not know if I will ever get Kity-Kity in the house, but having her stay close to home and know she is fed well is enough for me. I will make new post to let people know how she is doing.

Oh my God! What a terrible thing to have happen. I'd trap that kitty and take it to a vet pronto. Make sure that the spine does not become infected. Poor babies, both of you guys.   Get'm to a vet. Use a squirrel cage type trap, that way the vet can stick'm with a long knock-out needle through the cage. Never take a feral kitty in using a cat carrier, because of the danger to the vet and the kitty.

Lots of good luck to you and the kitty.
