Couldn't make it to the vet tonight so I had my mom boil some herbal bush leaves and gave it to him. He's been urinating less frequently and isn't peeing outside the litter box. He is also starting to cause trouble like he did before he got sick.
Do you know the name of the plant these come from?  If you know the scientific name, that would be especially helpful.  I'm just curious as I've not heard of this before.

Just found a vet and made an appointment. I'll be down there in the next hour.

The plant is common known as guinea hen weed or anamu.

Just got back from the vet. They took a urine sample to be sent away for testing and will call me tomorrow. They gave Felix an antibiotic shot and some Prazosin. Also some special food to help with his urination.

That is good. The food may contain something to help dissolve crystals, and also some salt to make him thirsty and so to drink more. It is very important that he drinks as much as possible - sometimes if I have a cat with urinary problems I give them an additional 20cc of water in a needleless syringe twice a day, to flush out their systems.

He was feeling a lot better after the vet visit but he started straining a few minutes ago. I gave him his medication 3 hours ago. How long does it take to work?

It's really hard to watch him suffer like this. I gave him his medication and special food this morning. He wasn't straining this morning and I didn't see anything on the floor so I assume he's doing better.

So, I just called the vet and talked to her and she told me that he has a tendency to form crystals. The urine test came back that he has tons of crystals and there is a high volume of bacteria in his urine. She told me that he has to be check regularly and that he has to stay on this dry food for the rest of his life. I asked about a raw diet and she told me that it's too risky.

It can take 24 hrs for meds to start working. If you don't see any improvement within 72 hours, then call the vet back.

Make sure you clean the areas outside the box with enzymatic cleaner.  Also, you might want to change his diet to mostly wet food if you're currently feeding dry.

I used to have a tomcat with this problem, Nimbus.  It seemed that anything with fish in it also made the crystals more likely.  Our vet did surgery on him, to shorten his urinary tract so that it would be less painful for him, but that didn't exactly cure it.  You can do a lot keeping him on the correct diet.  Follow your vet's advice on this.  If you'd like to put Felix back on raw, ask your vet for ways to do it that won't aggravate the problem.

Vet has no knowledge of a raw diet. That is why I asked here. She told me to look into it.
