We got Sylvester in February, and he hid for quite awhile back then, so he really wasn't out amongst the wood stove, but it is almost time to start it up and I hope that he stays off of it and senses it is very hot, he sometimes jumps on it when it is cold, and when I see him do that I chase him off, I just hope that he stays off it and doesn't jump on it like Sassy did many years ago, she was on and off immediately and was okay, but I guess we shall see! He does have the fur between his toes since he is part Maine Coon, so that might help him if he does, but let's hope that he doesn't. When it is going we are usually around so we can watch him, but I dearly hope he doesn't jump on it when it is roaring!!!

I bet Sylvester will sense the heat coming of the wood stove. My kitchen stove is right next to my refrigerator and my Kitty likes to jump up on the stove in order to then jump up on top of the refrigerator but she never does that when the stove or oven is on. I figure she senses the heat.

That's what I think and hope too! I just remember years ago when Sassy jumped on it, it really surprised us that she did that, and like I said she yelped and was off it real fast! I don't want a replay of that!!!

My cat does this. I put saucepans with a bit of water on top of the hotplates after I've turned them off. If you could find a way to place a barrier to stop her from jumping on it? Or catproof the entrance to the kitchen?

Well it happened, Sylvester tried to go on the stove when it was hot; he was actually laying on the woodpile in the family room, then decided that he wanted to go upstairs but Stanley who has to always be up his *** was laying on the landing, Sylvester started to walk along the edge of the landing, I saw him looking towards the stove and not really loud said "Sylvester, be careful", he put his left paw on it and then his other paws and he turned and jumped down quickly and ran upstairs....ugh....I checked on him, picked him up and looked at his paw, Deb looked later too and we don't see any obvious damage, but every now and then he would hold it up a little bit, but we see no burn marks or blood or anything. I hope that this episode taught him that it is HOT, and he stays off of it like Sassy did many years ago after she did the same thing! And we can't put anything on his paws, he would just lick it off and might get sick from it.

Live and learn I guess, I HOPE!!! Good thing he has that extra fur between his toes.....ugh.....

It may be too late, but cool or cold water on the paw pads would help. Now that he's done this once, his nervous system will take over and will withdraw his paw before he can think. Just like you - you touch something hot and your hand flies away before you realize it's hot.

Thanks for the advice, I will keep that in mind but I hope that there isn't a NEXT time, that he did learn his lesson, the poor little guy! He seems fine now, no problems, is walking and running just fine, but after he did it last night he was laying down and he just looked so forlorn, like a little kid who knew he was bad lol! But he is fine, I DON'T want a repeat of this EVER AGAIN!!!

Just an update, the wood heating season looks like it is just about done here, and he never did jump on it again thankfully! He at times showed signs that he might want to eventually come down into the room, but never did-yet-but it took some of our other cats literally years before they did so he might too eventually. I did bring him down and held him in my lap once, but he jumped down and slowly walked away, so I didn't push it. But the main thing is he never did jump on it and get burned again!

Our cats will get in front of the wood stove when we get up in the morning, and get it roaring.  They seem to love being close to that stove...the more flames the better.
There's nothing they won't get on...EXCEPT the wood stove.  I don't know if they've learned the hard way, or just know better.  I've never seen any prints on top of it.  They are not afraid of it, but, they sure won't jump up there.  Not even in the summer.
