Hi all,

My house constantly smells!  When they go #2 it stinks!  Like more than I think is reasonable.  One of my cats is also extremely gassy.  So are there changes in diet I should be making?  What does it mean if my cats are stinky?

Also any suggested litter brands?  Currently I am using Blue's all natural walnut based.  I chose it because it was supposed to be free of harmful chemicals.  But it does absolutely nothing to cover up the stink.  The second they use the litter box the whole house smells.  Is this normal?  I don't know if maybe I am just expecting too much of a litter's ability to cover up stink or if mine is just really ineffective.  To some extent shouldn't the litter control the smell so it at least does not invade my whole house?!  I usually clean it twice a day--but it smells so bad I often do it more.

Thanks for any advice!!

What are you feeding your cat? What your cat eats does have an effect on how stinky the poop is. In general, cats who eat raw diets have poop that stinks very little to no odor at all (my Aby is one exception
) while cats who eat poor junk quality dry food have horribly stinky poop. Gassiness can also be caused by diet.

I'm not famliar with walnut litters. You can try a different brand of "regular" clumping type litter like Scoop Away or Fresh Step. That may help a little with the odor control.

I feed Fancy Feast wet and use Fresh Step litter. My house always smells great.

Stinky poo is almost always related to food. Kibble specifically is usually the cause. I feed raw, my cats stool doesn't smell.

I feed them dry food also by Blue.  I give them canned food occasionally---but they don't seem to like it.

The Blue Buffalo dry food may not be agreeing with your cats' tummies for some reason. Dry foods often contain ingredients that are not very digestible which means gas and stinky poop. Can you try a different brand of similar or higher quality food? I personally like the Nature's Variety Instinct brand of foods.

What canned foods have you tried? Cats can be picky about texture and brand and flavor.
