Any possible ways to cure a bladder out of control after urinary block?

My cat went in Monday in a pretty serious condition. Turns out he was battling urinary block, and it was pretty serious as he'd had it since Saturday. After a day and a half, he was sent home. During his stay he was pretty much on the brink of death, but they were able to save him by draining ( they told us he hadn't crystallized yet, the drainage was full of mucus and blood ). He had catheter in and easily went to the bathroom, but the problem is that his bladder is now expanded and as of now he can't pee on his own. When he brought him home, he had his personality back, was alert, ate and drank. Just exhausted, but otherwise okay- although he wouldn't go to he litter box. He leaked, and the vet said that as long as it was coming out, he'd be okay, But yesterday ( Thursday ) night we noticed he had started puking some, stopped eating ( did drink a little ) and was becoming more tired. We waited until his morning to call, and he was brought in for re blocking. He was stronger this time, and blockage wasn't as bad. When we brought him in today he was alert. They drained him, started him on a catheter again and I think some shot to help. But now the vet is telling us that we have just two choices: keep helping him for blocking ( and hope it helps him this time ) or out him down. He's staying for the night, and possibly the weekend, and they told us that when we bring him home, if he still can't pee on his own, then it's time to put him down, because if he's not doing so en that means his bladder won't shrink and he can't go on his own.

I'm just wondering, does anyone know if there are any other options? Is there any way to cure an expanded bladder? I'm really hoping his all works out and some miracle happens that allows him to pee in control. I really don't want to put him down, and I can't help but feel that there are other ways to help him that our vet doesn't see, or realize.

He's really such a sweet cat, and he's only three. He doesn't deserve this.

Any help?

Also, I've just been looking into it- from what I've said do any of you think that expressing his bladder would be an option? Or are there other ways, like a permanent catheter (not an expensive surgery, though) or any other methods?
Do you think it's even be worth it?

I am SO sorry no one has responded to your posts.  How IS your little guy?  You are SO right...he doesn't deserve this.  No cat does
Unfortunately, sometimes it just seems like life isn't fair.

I don't have an answer for you, but did you see this article?  It talks about things to do to try to keep your cat from having recurring bouts of Cystitis, which is apparently what is going on.  http://www.thecatsite.com/a/feline-idiopathic-cystitis-how-to-improve-your-cats-quality-of-life

Also, here's a thread where a few people with cats with this issue discuss what works for them:  http://www.thecatsite.com/t/270626/feline-idiopathic-cystitis-advice-support

Fortunately I didn't really need the help from here because as of now he is a brand new kitty! The vet kept him from Friday until today, keeping him on a catheter and meds. The poor thing has had a rough week, but he's been great today. They took the catheter out last night and was waiting until today to see if he was peeing on his own in the litter ( if he wasn't peeling then that would then be an issue ) but they called us this morning and said that he had started peeling without the catheter in, in the litter pan. So we took him home, he's been GREAT all day. It's like he wasn't even sick at all! He's been eating, drinking, going to the litter box quite a bit. Urine still a little bloody, but I think that is to be expected. He's jumping around and everything! he is a bit cautious jumping to high places and isn't chowing down food, but he is pretty normal. In fact, I think he is actually more lovable since we've taken him home than ever before. Always wanting us to pet him, and always purring/kneading at our feet. I think it's his way of saying he appreciates us, at least I hope so :)

thanks for the response!

Im only writing this because I feel like it's probably good to write about what happened to get it off my chest.

Greyson passed a few days after I last posted on this thread. His health was very positive after the last visit, cuddles and lots of affection. He wasn't totally normal, but we were happy because we thought it had passed. But after a couple days he started to gradually decline, although he was still drinking and eating a little so we nought he was just tired from the whole ordeal. We ended up having to take him in though, I believe it was the Saturday before thanksgiving if I'm remembering it correctly. The day we took him in he wasn't wanting to do anything but sleep. Honestly we were devastated knowing that there was a probably chance that the vet would bear bad news. And they did.The vet basically said there was nothing more to be done, his whole body had started to shut down (due to a sort of infection.) I don't think it was another blockage because his bladder was actually opposite, it wasn't expanded. They told us we could either put him down right there or just let nature take its course and he'd probably just slip away by a couple of days. It was a very tough choice but we opted to put him down because the thought of having to see him in any pain for a couple days and also the thought of us always watching to see whether he was even alive or not. It was a hard time, and I still find myself thinking of him a lot of time.
He was a very good boy, but I know he's not in pain anymore.
A week later, we decided to go to the shelter to adopt an adult kitty in honor of him. We ended up finding a very friendly calico who we fell in love with immediately. She's a bit younger than what we were going for, she's only a year and four months, but she's been a great addition to our household. ( although, she's not so sure of the dogs still - or they're not sure of her)

Thank you for the kindness and help. I know I'll be using this site more now on :rbheart:

I am so incredibly sorry to hear your sweet boy is at the bridge. You did all you could and then gave him the gift of being pain free. So happy you've adopted another in his memory. May you have many long, happy & healthy years together.

I am so sorry to read of the passing of Greyson
.  It's never easy even knowing how much pain they are in.  But, there is that comfort knowing that they're no longer suffering.

I too lost both my kitties, one in the summer and another on the 8th also had bladder issues among others.  If it were up to me I'd replace them now, but hubby needs time.

I think it's fantastic that you are giving a sweet calico a warm loving home.  I'm sure she'll adjust to the dog eventually.

When you're up for it you can do a memorial page for handsome Greyson in the forum Crossing The Bridge, and on a lighter note, you can celebrate your sweet new addition in the forum New Cats On The Block.

TCS is a great site and as you know it's chock full of information all feline related.

They will probably lock this thread as they usually do when the beautiful soul leaves us for greener pastures.

I wish you all the best with your sweet girl.

Warmest regards, Hope and my 2 angels

I'm so sorry to hear about your beautiful boy, Greyson.  It's always heartwrenching when something like this happens, but you definitely made the right decision in helping him cross the bridge rather than letting nature take it's course
.    He is now free of any pain he might have been in, and how wonderful that a new little one has been rescued in his honor.

We also rescued a little Calico (also about that same age when we did it) when our previous female passed.  That was 15 years ago, and we just lost her (Callie) earlier this year.  My how time flies.  I'm hoping having  this new little one around will help ease the pain of losing Greyson.

Again, my sympathies.

Run free at the bridge,
Greyson
