Hi.

I'm new to this site and would really appreciate feedback on this. I am fostering a stray cat. She was diagnosed with terrible stomatitis and just Monday had the majority of her teeth extracted. (the vet at the shelter was going to pull them all except her fangs but found out mid surgery that the shelter did not have a drill that she needed to do certain teeth and had to stop.) This poor cat. I picked her up after two days and her left eye is swollen shut and draining pus. I didn't see it until I got her out of her carrier at home that night but ran her back the next day (this morning.) The vet couldn't say what happened. She was given a convenia injection, gave me a tube of antibiotic eye ointment and one 6mg tablet of onsioa  which was useless because no way can I get near her mouth to give it to her. She won't eat. won't drink. I don't know if she ate or drank at the shelter. They said she did but how could she have if she's not eating or drinking now? They won't give me more pain meds for her. She's only about 1 1/2 years old if that. She has to go back when they get the drill to have the rest of her teeth removed. I feel like this is killing her. What the heck happened to her eye? The vet tech was an idiot and told me it was stress. No, not possible. The vet wasn't even able to examine the eye this morning because it was so swollen shut. The outside of her lid is red and bulbous. Her eye is draining. It's awful. What happened? Do you think she was hit in the eye with something? Did bacteria travel up a sinus and attack her eye? What can be done? I'm so upset about this.

Your poor kitty is probably not eating or drinking due to pain. Poor baby girl! Onsior is not strong enough for dental surgery. It is an anti-inflammatory. She needs something like Buprinex. She needs adequate pain meds ASAP. It is dangerous when a cat does not eat. It can lead to liver failure.

If the vet did not tell you, she needs to be on a wet food diet for a while so she does not tear her sutures. My cat needed pain meds for a couple weeks. I don't understand why on Earth vets are not prescribing adequate pain meds. It is beyond my comprehension. I'm sorry. You have a right to be upset.

Regarding the eye infection, I am not sure what happened. If the swelling does not start to go down by the morning, I would have it checked out. I would demand pain meds. If the vet doesn't prescribe Buprinex or something comparable, I would take her to another vet. This vet sounds sketchy. I don't think I would go back.

I took my cat to a board certified dental specialist because there are a number of things that can and do go wrong with extractions. They can leave part of the teeth or roots, which can continue to cause pain. A vet can damage or break the cat's jaw.

I hope your girl feels better soon! Get her some pain meds STAT. [emoji]10084[/emoji]️

Please do take her to another vet. She needs the pain meds and an antibiotic. Somehow, the infection from the teeth has migrated to the eye, and it can't be ignored. It could get much worse.

Mix some baby food chicken or turkey with water until it's like syrup and use a needless syringe to put some into the side of her mouth so she can swallow it. Dehydration seems to me to be a worse danger to her right now.

Thank you for the responses. I've been trying to syringe feed her baby food and also water. I had leftover buprenorphine in the fridge from another cat and gave her some of that. I did take her back to the vet regarding the eye and only then did the The vet give her a convenia injection  (a 2 week antibiotic). However, I am DEFINITELY taking her to my own vet tomorrow to have her checked out. I want to hear what another vet has to say about the fact that she was not given antibiotics BEFORE they operated and not even after the surgery. Only when I brought her back with pus in her swollen eye did the vet finally give an antibiotic. I will be asking for more pain meds too since I only have one more dose left of the buprenorphine (buprenix.)

She was taken to the shelter vet because she is a feral that I am fostering through them so they pay for her medical until she is adopted. However, I feel they botched her something awful.

I also think the infection traveled up the sinuses. What makes me furious is that I was told to talk to the vet TECH about it and she told me that that couldn't happen. She actually said it was probably stress. I was furious. However, as I said I will take her to my own vet tomorrow and hopefully they will give me pain meds for her. I will also pay for it myself to have the rest of her dental work done before I let the shelter vet ever touch her again. I just can't believe that poor little girl is going through all this.

Thanks again for the feedback.

Thank you for taking such great care of this poor baby girl!

No question, they should have given her antibiotics after her surgery. I don't understand the mentality of some vets. An ounce of prevention goes a long way. Your vet should also check her mouth to see if there is any infection there. Stomatitis is very painful. They should have also given you pain meds. Vet techs can have big egos sometimes. That tech should not have said that. It sounds like an awful experience.

I hope she feels better and gets her appetite back soon. :vibes::heart4:

My cat has had exactly the same dental treatment had 4 teeth out and came back with eyes swallon shut and when swelling reduced his 3rd eyelid is over his right eye and looks like it isnt going back any time soon I can't wait to see vet again because I heard its due to trauma or injury well unless they injured him ?? Or they traumatised him no matter how it all started it started at the vets practice

T Tindraws10868 , I would seriously consider taking your cat to a different vet. If this
injury is from abuse at the clinic how can you trust anyone there?
