Two of our cats, Chester, the cat in my avatar, and his sister, Teresa, have stopped grooming.  Their coats are so thick, I have started brushing them every day.  I get half a cat worth of fur every day from each.  No mats yet but if I don't brush for a few days, their fur is so thick, it comes out in chunks

They are each healthy otherwise and the vet suggested it is stress.  We moved seven months ago but the trouble started more than a year before that.

I have Feliway in all the rooms and there are seven cats trees scattered throughout the house.  No diet changes, no litter box issues (fingers crossed!) and only the occasional hiss or tussle.

 Any ideas?

So the problem started in your old place before the move?  hhmm, this is a riddle.  I would say, if you moved into a place with carpets from the other family or if there were pets in the new place before them, perhaps that could be stressing them out - new smells.  But, being this started in the old place, I'm stumped.

You said their health is good, and that includes teeth?

I'm glad to hear that litter habits are the same.

I hope you find some answers.  I'm curious as to other responses you get.

Best to you - Hope

Thanks, Hope.  At their last check up,each had a dental.  All seemed well, then

We moved from a house with carpets to one with laminate and hardwood floors.  The previous owners had a dog but no cats and the house was cleaned really well before we moved in.

The brushing I have been doing has done wonders.  Their coats seem shinier and less course.  I just feel so badly for them because it must be uncomfortable for them.

Uncomfortable to what, get brushed???  Cats loved getting brushed.  Ours "demand" daily brushings, although we love brushing her.  My boy who recently passed wouldn't eat without being brushed.  LOL

Now that its being done more regularly they will feel better about their coats and perhaps start cleaning again.

Grooming your kitty's is good for you and them, it's great for bonding, and it's also a good time to massage them gently and check for lumps and bumps.

Keep us posted.

These two were brought in as ferals when they were six months old.  We did everything wrong and they normally don't even allow us to touch them.  I've had to trap them to get them to the vets!

I have been taking the time each day to seek them out.  Teresa will now jump onto her cat tree when she sees the brush but it is 50-50 whether Chester will run away or allow brushing.  Even with the little brushing he's been getting, I have to say his coat does look better.

Thanks for your reply!
