I'm having some issues with one of my cats. She only does this hacking cough thing when she's trying to sleep or relax. Mostly happens at night. She doesn't have roundworms or anything like that. Her bloodworm was good a few months ago when last checked out. This is a new development & has been going on over a week since I noticed. Everyone keeps telling me it's a hairball but I'm starting to worry & wonder. Anything you can share is much appreciated [emoji]128522[/emoji]

A few things that come to mind are allergies, asthma, mycoplasma infection, a heart condition, ect, ect.. the type of cough matters too. There's straight coughing and a cough where they crouch down and extend there neck out, also there's a thing called a reverse cough.

Unfortunately, The cough in of itself is just one symptom and could mean many things.

My sister's 9 year old cat had the same thing and it turned out to be asthma. We kept thinking it as a hairball but one never came up. We changed her litterbox to clay with no perfumes at all and changed her to a raw food diet. The perfumes are toxic. It tool 3 weeks for the hacking to completely stop.

Her switch to the raw food diet wasn't that hard. We buy the frozen pellets. Of course she only likes the rabbit formula which is the most expensive?

My sister researched and decided that she didn't want to give her steroids and other drugs. We did the lifestyle change and it worked. I guess it works for people and animals.

Good Luck

She's one of my foster kitties but I consider her one of my own now. We're setting up a new appt to get her checked out but in the meantime I've been adding salmon oil to their hard food (just enough to coat it) & giving her the hairball gel. I really don't think it's a hairball & if it is, then she needs helps getting it out. I just hope it's nothing really bad. Asthma I can handle. I had a cat in the past that had it. I just hate to see her go through this when I can't fix it ASAP [emoji]128533[/emoji] Thank you so much for the advice guys! It's so appreciated!!!

You can try cleaning around the house too. Dusting and changing the air filters, ect. If it's allergies or asthma that should help some while you wait for your appointment.
