I'm just curious if anyone has experience with the wet and dry formulas for this brand? I plan to feed my cat mostly wet food, with dry food here and there for variety. I work in a store that sells a variety of premium pet food, and they said that I can get Nulo Freestyle food for free through one of our Sales Representatives. This would be a really great deal, but only if Nulo is safe, healthy, and complete for my cat. I'm willing to pay for a higher end Food if Nulo isn't that good. A quick read through of the ingredients didn't seem that bad to me, but I wanted some more experienced opinions.

Jet.com presently is selling Nulo Salmon & Lentils dry for a very good price, so I think I will sample it.  A while back I read about the history of the Nulo company and came away impressed.  They have lots of fans.

Eh I'm not really a fan. Fish is really high up in that ingredient list, as well as peas and lentils, neither of which are ideal. It's also suspicious that   DL Methionine is fairly high up on that list. It can be used as a flavor enhancer when it's lower on the list, but when it's higher on the list it often means the meat is lower in meat based protein, which is not good. You'll find it higher up on the list in lost of lower quality foods.

I have been using Nulo wet for awhile now and am happy with it. I try not to go fish crazy, so I use the non-fish flavors, which do include some fish. There doesn't seem to be a perfect cat food, but this comes pretty close. My cat likes it, although she is not a picky eater, so that probably isn't helpful.

The Nutro Freestyle Salmon caught my eye because while Salmon is the first ingredient, turkey meal and chicken meal are the next two ingredients.  That means that there is more poultry in the recipe than Salmon, unless the poultry ratio is very low.  I see that Cod is the fourth ingredient.

I had previously looked at this food when trying to decide on brands to feed my cat, but I decided against it because of the cranberries in the ingredients.  Too much cranberry over time can be toxic to cats (the benzoic acid in it to be exact)  so I wouldn't recommend feeding it all the time.   The fish in it is another concern, but fed in moderation would be ok.   It definitely seems like a healthier choice than the supermarket brands but I would maybe rotate with something else that doesn't have fish or cranberries.  Btw, the duck and lentils dry food seems to have less fish ingredients than the turkey and duck one if you need help deciding between the 2 drys.

it is annoying that the pet food manufacturers add ingredients that are superfluous or harmful (depending on the dose) in their recipes.  I was always curious (and dubious) about cranberries in cat food.  It's as though the pet food companies think that we will be eating their products ourselves, rather than feeding our cats. LOL.

That said, my gal really went nuts about two grain free recipes that include cranberries;  Evolve Chicken formula and Purina Beyond Superfood Blend Herring.  On one occasion I inadvertently left out the Purina Beyond package, rather than return it to my  cat pantry.  Well, she DESTROYED the bag while I was away at work, trying to get to the food!!!

As for options, I have found that rotation works best for us.  My gal pretty much likes/eats everything I put in her bowl; with the exception  Whole Earth Farms duck kibble.  She also has turned up her nose to Newman's Own wet and to Iams wet.  But all else in the more than one dozen recipes I feed her has been consumed and enjoyed.  She eats a different brand every day.

Yeah it is really unfortunate all of the unnecessary stuff they add! I'm sure it's fine in small doses/moderation but I prefer to just avoid it.  The dry food i feed does have peas in the ingredients so I had to give in to one filler.

Yes, at least two of the brands she likes contain whole peas or pea protein.  Fortunately however, pea is the usually the 4th ingredient (or later) down the list.  You know, you can read all the cat pages and blogs and you'll get contradictory information and opinions about ingredients.  Therefore, I read everything with a grain of salt.  I judge the benefits of her menu, or lack thereof, by her energy level, her general well being, and her deposits in the litter box.  Like I said, I've been lucky so far because she has outright rejected only two recipes out of the 15 or so that we've tried.  And that's just wet food.  As for kibble, I haven't seen her turn it down yet; and we have several brands and recipes of kibble in the pantry.

Yes I've definitely found all of the contradicting advice on what to avoid the most a bit confusing, but after taking all opinions into consideration and doing my own research I've got a good sense of what ingredients to be more careful of.   So far she has loved all of the dry food I've tried with her (she's onto her 3rd brand, each one healthier than the previous) but she is getting a little picky with wet food.  She gets bored with the same flavor/textures pretty quickly lately so I need to keep switching

My pet food store just started carrying this and I grabbed a few cans.  Kit is so-so receptive to it, but she did eat it.  I bought the "freestyle" I believe it's called.  I was coming here to check to see if anyone has used this food.

It is reasonable priced and since her favorite is PRIDE by Instinct ($$$), whenever I can find some that costs a little less, I'm for that.

The "freestyle" and "medal series" are the same foods. Freestyle is packaged for independent pet stores and medal series is for petsmart. Same ingredients and formula.

I used the poultry flavors (canned only), mostly the chicken and turkey one. My cats LOVED it...like INHALED it. It is a good food. Yes, there are a few unesscessary ingredients and if you want no fish, this is not the food for you. I only used the chicken and turkey recipe and occasionally others because that one had the least fish. I never tried the dry food as I feed Orijen dry.

Mine don't eat this any more because they got sick (unrelated to the food) and vomited after eating a few times....and now have an aversion to all foods they had during that time period :-/ Otherwise, I'd still be feeding it.

Chewy.com also has the freestyle cans.
