Hello one and all. I have 2 cats. Beezle is about 14 lbs. Big must be well into his mid 20's (i think). Now I rescued both cats from the same home at different times. Beezle (I got him first) doesn't eat that much. He's not a big fan of treats or anything else really. Big on the other hand eats like the Russians are in the harbor. Now he was a big cat to begin with. When I got him he was 17 lbs. and not in the best of health. Because of this I fed him a little to much. He was sick so wanted him to get healthy and strong. Everything I put out in front of him he ate. I cut back his soft food intake to once a day ( I do realize it should have been this to begin with).

Here is the problem. Beezle eats sparingly and when he wants. I have always left food out for him. But Big on the other hand eats everything. I split the can of soft food for them in the morning since for right now its always the same time. Big eats some of his portion and then butts Beezle out of his and eats it and then goes back to his portion.Sometimes Beezle just eats a little and walks away, then Big comes up and eats it all.

I can't really feed them seperate and Beezle usually just walks away from his food. I don't have time to watch them eat all day. What can I do before Big explodeds?

I have to supervise feeding times at my house because I have one who will eat her food and then everyone else's if left to her own devices.  So, I stand there and watch them eat.  If one walks away and leaves food behind, I pick it up and put it in the microwave to keep the other kitties out of it.  Once everyone settles down after mealtime, I offer the food again to the one, again standing guard.

How often do you feed them and when? This cat is huge.

Is there a place Big can't get to, where you could put Beezle's food? Like maybe on a counter or table, if Big is too big to jump up?

Contrary to popular belief, canned food is better for weight loss in cats. Kibble is very calorie-dense and has a lot of carbs, while canned food is mostly water and has more protein. So they can eat more canned food and get fewer calories.

I think I'd switch Big to an all-canned diet, and leave a bowl of kibble for Beezle somewhere that Big can't go.

Thank you. That's a good idea. I may try to get a very tall cat tree. He's a pretty good climber even with the extra weight. But if it's high enough it may work. I need to stop this now before he can't move. He loves wet food. It may work. I'll try to keep you posted on his progress.
