Hi I'm new here, my lil man Paul who is nearly four and is a indoor cat started becoming unwell last week I thought his allergies Was having a flare up, so after a day of him from him not being himself he started vomiting more and more and becoming lethargic so immediately took him to the vets.

The only issue is my boy Paul doesn't like any one outside of our family unit so he becomes quiet aggressive when he's at the vets but it wasn't like him to be this aggressive, so the vet prescribe some steroids and de-furrem as suspected he was slightly constipated, she wasn't able to look at him properly due to his behaviour, so this was weds by he was abit lethargic thurs and by Friday he had barely eaten and still vomiting , so Saturday comes And he's not eating at all, vomiting and very lethargic I left it untill Sunday hoping that the meds would kick it but by then it had been 48hrs no food.

So I take him to the vets 3:15pm and explain every thing as he's such a pain they wanted to sedate him to take bloods and pulptate his tummy. Results are low while blood count and one high liver enzym they've told me its possibly a virus, normal revearseble sedative didn't work so they used ketermine and methadon (still floppy when I brought him home)They gave him anti sickness jab and some tablets to reduce acid, He's still they same if not worse it's now been over 72hours since food I've called them but they seem to think he's best at home and should eat but all he does is lay down hasn't gone to the toilet or eating. But has had water today

I don't no what to do? Can any one advise me what to do next? Thank you

It sounds like you are on top of it. When cats aren't eating it is hard to convince them to eat even though we know its for the best. You can try offering plain boiled chick with a little rice or human baby food (no garlic or onion, the little jars of meat baby food) or take a wet food you know the cat likes and mix in water to make it more of a paste that is easier to eat. Usually cats will go for one of those even if they aren't feeling good. You can also take a little bit of the human baby food and dab it on the tip of his nose. Cats will instinctively lick if there is something on their nose and that has worked for me a few times to get my cat eating (she licks her nose and I put the bowl right under her chin and she starts lapping up more food, liquids from a wet cat food are good for this too). You can also try syringe feeding ... but I am not a fan of this and not very good at it m

Some cats will only eat when the humans aren't around (one of mine does that when she is sick) so try getting a visual of the food bowl and leaving him alone with it for an hour or two to see if he eats when alone. Most cats do recover more quickly in their homes so it isn't surprising that you were sent home. Just keep an eye on him and take him back if he looks worse or develops more symptoms. There are several random cat illnesses out there that can come in, scare us to death, and leave as if nothing happened. You may need blood work if it is any of those more obscure illnesses. The sad thing is that, compared to dogs, there isn't a whole lot of cat care knowledge out there even in the vet world. Cats just were treated just like dogs for a long time even though they have several biological differences that affect treatment.

Hopefully your fur-baby is feeling better soon.

If he's still vomiting and not eating, I'd request x-rays to rule out any blockages or foreign bodies in his intestines.  The x-rays will also show if there's any gas in his tummy or in his intestines.

Thank you for your replys, I've tried boiled chicken, I think he will be going back today as it's been 4 days now he's drinking and showing interest in food but he sniff it licks his lip and walks away. I'm annoyed that they didn't do any other test when they sedated him and now he has to go through that all again which is unfair on him I'm hoping they will sedate him with me present so it's less stressful for him.

He's more alert now but still lethargic but when I got up this morning he got up with me first time since he's been unwell.

I'll do any thing for him to feel better xx

Just a update for any one reading, Paul is now staying at the vets he even let them look him over with out sedation that's how poorly he's feeling, they re looked at his bloods and all white cells are extremely low, there going to redo his blood tests and give him a ultra sound depending on results possibly scan/X-rays.

This vets seem to think it could possibly be some thing to do with his bone marrow.

ask them to do sub fluids. the lip smacking is nausea. they can give Cerenia or Zofran for this. it's not unusual for the medicine to cause this. kind of a vicious cycle. fluids should be the most important thing at this point. keeping hydration. then treat for appetite issues-anti nausea and anti acid meds. then syringe feeding is going to be necessary.

keep us posted.

Just had a call they've giving him a pain killer and he's now eating which is good and I'm happy but there saying they want to sent him home tomorrow as he's being "difficult" and there saying it's possible because of a small blood clot it the test that the blood test are wrong what have I paid for then??? A pain killer will only be covering the problem!

Is it wrong that I've basically demanded they do test they've promised to do? To re do the bloods and to do the scan? I feel like a terrible fur parent asking for it but I want to to what causing my baby so much pain that he doesn't want eat? He's been ill for a week I'm worried if I just bow to them and take him home he's going to be in the exact same way when his the pain med course is over or be something more sinister and I won't no and he will deteriorate to the point he can't be saved.

This is the third time I've taken him there because he unwell yes he hates the vets and is very aggressive with them but it's duty of care.

I may have to change vets after this is all over I'm finding it very frustraighting that I get told what the game plan is and then they change the plan just because he's had a pain killer and that's helped him eat, I WANT A DIAGNOSIS!! Not it's possibly a upset tummy I want its 80-100% certain it's this or that and this will help him feel better!!

Sorry for the rant I've typed this with anger, worry and frustration xxxx

Is there any way you can get him to another vet?  I'm no expert, but one thing I know is to trust your instinct when it comes to your babies--and it sounds like you have a gut feeling something is being missed and overlooked.  I just don't like the sound of them wanting to just send him home because he is being "difficult".

I've just found we have a cat only vets in my area who specialise with cats who don't like the vets, so I'm going to pop there tomorrow and have a chat, before picking Paul up a but the only issue in my area is that all vets refer to the vets I'm registered with for major test and emergency/out of hours.

So im going to make sure his current vets do the test tomorrow morning, but for future I'm going to register him there if all seems well when I go have a chat. It's sooo irritating that I've already paid £250+ to find out nothing I'm soo glad I have insurance as I'm doing a direct claim for this overnight stay and the tests (if they do them)

but annoyed that I signed consent forms for sedation for blood & scan and told I'd receive a call after all tests have been conducted with the results and then they just call me after 5hrs to say we didn't do it because we gave him a pain killer and he's eating now but won't let any one near him. I need to know why he's in PAIN

I don't think it's unreasonable for the vet to perform the tests you've requested.  I'm glad you're going to get him to a different vet, though. Be sure to get a copy of all the bloodwork and any x-rays (radiographs) that have been taken so you'll have them for your records and for the new vet.
