I agree! It seems very expensive. You could try making your own treats by hiding it or crushing it in something he likes.

It looks like Benadryl comes in transdermal form, which is pretty easy to apply. I am not sure what the pros and cons are, except it has more side effects. You could ask your vet. It looks much cheaper. I really like Zyrtec. However, every cat is different. A cat may respond to one and not another.

I checked into this med right away. I was very disappointed that the cost was up to 23$ per dose. It just occurred to me I assumed it was a daily dose. Back to the drawing board.

Yep. Dose is twice a day at up to 23$ each dose. I will check with my pharmacy for a better price.

Sorry StormySkiez! I took a preliminary look to see what I could find out. Based on what I saw, that does not sound right-much too high. Did you get a dose from your vet? It is based on weight. It looks riskier if you overdose a cat on Benadryl.

If you let me know the dosage, I can help you figure out the cost. I would definitely check with various compounding pharmacies on the generic transdermal or topical gel- "Diphenhydramine" (generic name). It comes in a pre-loaded syringe. You push out a small amount (depending on the prescribed dosage) to put on Sherlock's ear. The tube lasts a while.

Thank you ForestMeows. That information was from pet meds. The woman on the phone told me that was the cost for 1 dose. The main vet I am working with told me there was not a transdermal option. I have called him 3 times for help switching Sherlocks med and I get the feeling he is annoyed with me. I can call again and send the link for this particular med to see if he will give me a dose amount. I have been slowly switching him to LID food. I see the LI Natures Instint turkey dry foods second ingredient I think is peas............ I am looking at other food however it says to put him on a protein he has never been on so that rules out a lot. This is tough and in the mean time my cat suffers. The vet is no help with this at this point.

It seems like the lady on the phone may have quoted you a price for a 100 mg syringe. At least that seems consistent with the website. There is a Cyber15 coupon code, which brings it down to $16.37 for a 100 mg syringe. I am not a vet. So, please ask your vet for Sherlock's proper dosage. For rough cost purposes, the standard dose is 1 mg per pound, which would be 10 mg for a 10 pound cat. This would mean you would have 10 doses for a 10 pound cat in the 100 mg syringe. This would be $1.64 per dose for a 10 pound cat. You don't want to give him more than the proper dose. Here is some more info:

http://www.thecatsite.com/t/176902/benadryl-dosage

It is not unreasonable for your vet to call in a script for his allergies. Don't feel guilty at all! If you want to try the transdermal Benadryl, I would have the compounding pharmacy fax a request to your vet and follow up with them. That way, they can see that there is in fact a transdermal option. Other compounding pharmacies carry it too.

Regarding the food, Sherlock may not have an issue with peas. Every cat is different. You could try him on the Instinct only for a month or so to see if he is less itchy. If not, you could try another LID food for about a month. Keep track of the foods and ingredients. If he does well on a food, it is a good indication he is not sensitive to those ingredients. If he does not do well, keep track of the common ingredients so you can figure out what may be bothering him.

Hope you can get some help for Sherlock soon! :vibes:

You are an angel ForestMeows. My vet said it prob won't help however he will be happy to prescribe it for me. Unfortunately pet meds doesn't even send this item to NC or OK!!!!!! I live in NC. I sent him an email to see if he knows anywhere local to get this or anything transdermal. I need a lot of good luck vibes[emoji]128062[/emoji][emoji]128062[/emoji][emoji]128047[/emoji][emoji]128049[/emoji]

Here is a short video on applying transdermal medication. The video does not mention that the medication can build up on the ear. So, it is important to periodic clean the ear off so that the medication properly absorbs.

The med is super thick like a lotion. Thick. He did great with the application. I will definitely have to keep his ears clean.

I couldn't have gotten this far without you're persistence to point me the right direction. I really appreciate you spending the time to help me help Sherlock [emoji]10084[/emoji]️

He seemed to show signs of improvement the first 2 days. This morning he has a new lesion. He at Beyond trout and catfish wet food for a dinner snack and his normal LID NI turkey dry food. I am logging his outbreaks and diet. I have a liquid steroid I can give him. I have not yet as I wanted to see if the allergy med would heal him.

The allergy med he has is chorpheniramine. Has anyone had this stuff work?? This is what my vet uses. I asked for the one in the pet meds link. That is what I thought I was going to get from my pharmacy [emoji]128576[/emoji].
