How much Purely Fancy Feast should I be feeding my kittens?

Hi guys, I have to feed my cats Purely Fancy Feast, it's the only food that works for them.  We were given some by the shelter, and recommended to feed it to them. We started (not realizing the difference in fiber) feeding them some other food it was 9x more fiber....... and they had bloody poop. Multiple vet visits told us nothing and the fact that we have returned them to eating PFF and seen the blood slowly fade away (as well as cause their stools to be a smaller circumference) leads me to believe high fiber was what caused the problem and this is the solution. I know you can make cat food and I am working on gathering things for that but right now I am feeding them Purely Fancy Feast because it is convenient and I am going to have to take my cats to a pet boarding place soon for the weekend so I need to know exactly how much to feed them.

I think normally I feed them 3 2oz trays per day and maybe some other low-fiber cat food as a snack.

But regardless of what I feed them I am trying to find out what I am supposed to be feeding them.

They are 8 months old and weigh about 6 pounds.

The package says "Feed an average sized adult cat 1 tray per 1.5-2 pounds of body weight daily."

But it would be more for a growing kitten right? How do I figure it out?

Like people, cats have different needs.  Usually you go by what THEY choose.  If they are satisfied after each of those 3 meals and their weight appears good, then stick with it.  If they finish all the food at each meal and want more, then perhaps it is time to increase the amount since they are still growing.  It does seem that kittens generally eat twice as much wet food as adults in my experience, and their appetites change with growth spurts.  I am not familiar with that particular form of Fancy Feast because it's fairly new.  Before those fancy feast meals were considered "appetitizers" and did not have all the vitamins and minerals needed for a complete diet.  You should write down all the ingredients and compare with other foods to make sure the food has most of the usual vitamins and minerals, and TAURINE, because that is important to their hearts.

Fancy Feast added vitamins and minerals to what was known as Appetiziers and renamed the entire line as Purely. So yes, the Purely line is a complete balanced diet for cats

If the cats are fine with their current food amounts and schedule, then I wouldn't worry about it. If they're constantly screaming for more food, then you need to give them more food.

I understand the idea of listening to whether the cats are hungry of course. I am looking for a starting point, surely there are nutritional guidelines for cats. Also I don't want to tell the boarding place to just feed them as much as they want... I am trying to make instructions for them right now.

I usually give them breakfast and dinner as a given, and something in between when they are awake and meowing and maybe something after.

The place only gives 3 meals for free, guess I will have to pay them to feed more meals. Prob not much $ anyway.

But I have nowhere to start from. According to calories, according to this site, I should be feeding them almost 8 trays per day. (That would be like $260 per cat per month... if that is what I have to do for my cats to not have bloody poop we will try until I can make the perfect food for them)

So am I starving my kitties? They do meow sometimes... if I think it is the food meow I feed them but still I don't end up giving them 8 trays...

I don't want to start giving them twice as much as I am now especially because they have problems with blood on poop... what do you think? Am I underfeeding them?

Well I told the boarding folks to feed them 3-6 depending on what the cats want plus the Purely Fancy Feast treats which are 100% meat, that is the only ingredient and they're in this little package which I know it is wasteful but it's convenient for certain situations.

We just adopted them a few months ago and I wonder what they think now that they are in a cage again... A LARGER cage than the shelter. Their little "condo" they're in now is just the right size I think, cats are actually comfortable in a small territory when in unfamiliar surroundings. But still I wish I could have told them not to worry, they will be back home in their own territory with us in a couple days :( I miss them

I'd go with the info from Catinfo.org The general rule is to feed 20 to 25 calories per pound of ideal body weight daily. So a 6 lb cat should eat 120 to 150 calories a day. The Purelys are about 42 calories per tray so a 6 lb cat should eat roughly 3 to 4 trays a day, maybe a little more for a still (slowly) growing 8 month old.

The label on pet food tends to overstate how much food you should feed. Pet food companies do it so you go through food faster and have to buy more food more often which means more $$ for them.

Cats tend to be stressed out during boarding so they may not eat as much as they would at home.

LTS3 your estimate matches up pretty well with what the PFF package says, but that is what they recommend for an adult cat of that weight... kittens need like 2x more right, or exactly how much more exactly? The box doesn't say anything about kittens... THAT is what I want to know lol...

Well we are back home from our trip so I guess ! am going to keep feeding them their regular meals and whenever they say they are hungry like I have been.

At the boarding place looks like they fed them on the low side, probably about 3 trays per day although I said they could have more. I guess they might have been a bit tense there to eat much, but I don't think they had too bad of a time, they seem very happy now that they are home and so are we
