Rocky acted like something was hurting when i got home from work yesterday but he was purring so i thought he would be fine to go to the vet today. He hasnt been as playful the last few days. He did not have any marks on him when i got home n went to bed at 11. At 3 am i woke up to him growling and biting himself and he had chewed a hole in his hip. The local vets were closed so i took him to the emergency vet an hour away. They thought it was just a would from another cat. He has always been touchy about his back end and my husband said he jumped like he had a sharp pain. I was afraid they were wrong do we went in to the regular vet office and they think the same thing.

They gave him meloxicam and clavamox. The vet had estimated him to be 1 year old when we were at the vet in june.

Does this sound right or could something else be wrong with him?

It sounds like an abscess and the photos looks like an infection (which an abscess is). The chewing and growling could have been the infection reaching the point where it just hurt and he was trying to make it hurt less. I don't know about you, but I am horrible about messing with bruises and cuts on myself. More than once I've popped zits or messed with infections to get them to drain and feel better. It could have been the same for him.

Just keep an eye on it and keep up with the medications. Take him back if you notice anything else. But it should heal on its own fairly quickly with treatment. Most of the time when one of my cats get infections its a week for it to heal enough that they feel better and it looks better.

It's hard to know, but very possible he had a wound already, and it was getting to the point of abscessing, which it did during the night.  often a puncture wound  will do this, and you won't even be aware there IS a wound because you can't even see it until it  festers open.

I have a question about that cone of shame he's wearing.  Is that TIED on?  It looks like it, and it looks like he could untie it pretty easily, or get his foot caught in the tie pretty easily.  I've never seen one like that before, and currently am dog sitting a dog whose wearing one that looks very similar only it snaps on and can be easily sized.

Anyway, sending healing vibes for the little guy

My vet has given me one of those tie ones before. They are easier to adjust and size to the individual. Ours was tied in a smaller bow though so a foot couldn't get caught in it.
